Jefferson Lab Scientists Receive DOE Early Career Awards

Three young scientists affiliated with Jefferson Lab have been awarded five-year research grants as part of the DOE Office of Science’s Early Career Research Program. Anne-Marie Valente-Feliciano, Anselm Vossen and Raul Briceño are among 84 scientists awarded nationwide. Read more here .

ACCELERATOR/EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR PHYSICS
The CEBAF Accelerator is currently in its Scheduled Accelerator Down period, which will continue into early August. Many staff members are engaged in a wide range of projects related to CEBAF maintenance and improvements. Some of these SAD projects include:
• Central Helium Liquefier and End Station Refrigerator maintenance.
• 5th-pass radiofrequency separator leak repair.
• Detailed analysis of optics data from spring 2018, to identify and correct model errors.
• Modify Hall C beamline to improve beam transport to the hall (mimic Hall A beamline design).
• Gradient maintenance tasks (includes helium processing, cryomodule swaps, and other items).
• Move Low Energy Recirculator Facility cryomodules to CEBAF.
• Power grid maintenance items.

THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
A new formulation is presented of pseudoscalar meson loop corrections to nucleon parton distribution functions (PDFs) within a nonlocal, covariant chiral SU(3) effective field theory. The nonlocal Lagrangian respects gauge and Lorentz invariance and generates additional interactions associated with gauge links. This is used to compute the full set of proton to meson + baryon splitting functions, which in general contain on-shell and off-shell contributions, as well as new nonlocal contributions associated with the finite size of hadrons. These will be applied to study various flavor asymmetries in the nucleon's PDFs to be measured at Jefferson Lab and other facilities.

ESH&Q
Pay Attention to Moving Objects
According to the National Safety Council, one of the leading causes of work-related injury and deaths is contact with objects that fall, roll, fly, slide, slip and swing. In these situations, inattention to surroundings and being distracted can lead to injury, as does faulty equipment, lack of training, improper worker behavior, or lack of workplace assessments and housekeeping. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration notes that about 75 percent of “struck-by…” fatalities involve heavy equipment, so workers should be especially attentive when operating machinery and when working around it. This NSC webpage offers additional tips employers and employees can use to help prevent injury from contact with objects.

COMPUTING
Emergency Home Directory Server Outage Today at 5 p.m.
The CNI group will perform emergency maintenance on the Home file server today at 5 p.m. The Home file server holds the J drive, as well as the Common User Environment home directories on Linux/Mac machines. The redundancy of the server should allow this to be done without a noticeable outage. The work will be done after close of business out of caution due to the importance of this server to the Jefferson Lab community. If there is a noticeable outage due to unforeseeable circumstances, it should last no more than 10 minutes. If you have any questions or concerns about the maintenance, contact the IT Division Help Desk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.

Jefferson Lab Computer User Account Audit
On Monday, July 16 , the Jefferson Lab IT Division will start the annual computer user account audit. All Jefferson Lab Supervisors and Sponsors of staff, Users and contractors with lab computer accounts are required to review and re-authorize computer user accounts annually. This audit is a critical part of maintaining an appropriate level of cyber security. Once the audit begins, the IT Division will send emails to all Jefferson Lab Supervisors and Sponsors with instructions on how to complete the audit. This audit must be completed by close of business on Friday , Aug. 17. If you have any questions about the audit, contact the IT Division Help Desk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
JSA Jefferson Lab Sales Tax Exemption
Starting July 1 , 2018, Jefferson Lab is exempt from ALL sales tax for items that are purchased. Exemption certificates will be furnished to the lab’s general suppliers via Procurement. PCard holders will be given a laminated card with the lab’s Virginia tax number to provide to vendors when making purchases. In addition, exemption certificates will be available to complete, for those vendors who require a certificate on file. If you have any questions, contact Kay Lewis at x7518.

Employee Tour of Jefferson Lab Set for Tuesday, July 24
Have you ever wanted to see the experimental halls and the accelerator tunnel, but have not had the opportunity to do so? Jefferson Lab employees, Users, students and contractors will have that opportunity on Tuesday, July 24 , 1:30-4:00 p.m. The tour will include stops at the Test Lab, the CEBAF Accelerator tunnel, and Experimental Halls C and D. The visit to each facility will be guided by subject-matter experts. Photos may be taken. Space is limited, and your supervisor's approval and advance registration is required. Deadline to sign up is July 20 . For signup instructions and more information, contact Mike Robbins , x7617.

Check Out a New Installment of Tech Tuesday !
Thomas Jefferson said in a letter to his son-in-law, Thomas Mann Randolph, that “besides the comfort of knowledge, every science is auxiliary to every other.” I see over and over again the accuracy of our 3rd president’s words. I see it as Chief Technology Officer here at Jefferson Lab, where I work to make sure that the new methods and technologies we develop for nuclear physics research have opportunities to make our lives better in ways unrelated to their original purpose. Read more here .

CONTACT
The JLab Weekly provides information on the status of safety, accelerator operations, experiments, reviews, upcoming activities and special events. Deadline for submission is every Tuesday by 10 a.m. Submit new items to: the Communications Office or contact Kandice Carter at x7263.
