The Nucleus: Coming Soon in 3D
Physicians have long used CT scans to get 3D imagery of the inner workings of the human body. Now, physicists are working toward getting their first CT scans of the inner workings of the nucleus. A measurement of quarks in helium nuclei demonstrates that 3D imaging of the inner structure of the nucleus is now possible. Read more here .
ACCELERATOR/EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR PHYSICS
The CEBAF Accelerator ran well, delivering continuous wave beam to all four halls through the end of the week and weekend. Beam delivery was halted on Monday for scheduled accelerator studies, which were underway until 1:39 p.m., when a 4160 Volt transformer failed. The transformer is one of a pair needed to power the Central Heli um Liquefier 1, and its failure rippled through the site, bringing down CHL 2 and the End Station Refrigerator, as well as magnets and other systems in the accelerator. Within hours, the problem had been identified and actions were being taken to mitigate the down. A pair of replacement transformers have bee n located, and plans are underway to purchase and install the units as soon as feasible; current downtime estimates are one-three weeks. In the meantime, CHL 2 is holding the North Linac at 2 Kelvin, CHL 1 is partially operating and is holding the South Linac at 4K, and the ESR recovery in support of the experimental equipment is ongoing. The current run schedule calls for completion of the spring run on Friday, March 23 ; however, a modification to the schedule is now under discussion to mitigate loss of beam time. Meanwhile, staff members and Users are making the best of the unexpected down to perform opportunistic maintenance, injector tuning and accelerator optimization tweaks in the North Linac.
THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
A model based on Regge theory is proposed to describe photoproduction of light vector mesons. A fit to SLAC data is performed and predictions are made for the energy and momentum transfer dependence of the spin-density matrix elements in photoproduction of ω, ρ0 and ϕ mesons at Eγ∼8.5 GeV , which will soon be measured at Jefferson Lab.

Keep Tornado Preparedness in Mind Year Round
Tornadoes can occur year round in eastern Virginia. Therefore, it is critical to maintain a high level of tornado preparedness by annually reviewing tornado awareness and response actions featured in t his lab poster . Also review the Emergency Evacuation Maps in your work areas to identify nearby Severe Wind Take Cover areas, designated with a funnel shape within a yellow circle. Lastly, see the full memo for information on the differences between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning and tips on staying safe when a tornado strikes.
COMPUTING
Prepare Now for Windows 7 End of Life in January 2020
If you have systems (desktops or laptops) with hardware that can only support Windows 7, plan now to replace the systems in FY18 or FY19. Starting in FY19, the IT Division will no longer install Windows 7 on new or existing systems. All builds and rebuilds will be Windows 10 only. In general, all systems older than 2012 should be excessed. For more information, see the full staff memo .
GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
New Foreign Travel Requirement for Visas to China
The Chinese Embassy has recently put a new regulation into place for visas. All “F” visa applications are now being sent to the Chinese Government for approval. The “F” visa is the proper visa for Jefferson Lab employees to travel for scientific meetings, workshops, conferences, Jefferson Lab business, etc. This new step in the process is taking up to three weeks for completion. Be aware of this additional timeline when submitting travel approval for China. This three-week visa application process takes place after DOE approval of travel in the system. If you have any questions about this requirement, contact Sue Ewing at x7687.
