Quarks Feel the Pressure in the Proton

The first measurement of a mechanical property of a subatomic particle reveals the distribution of pressure inside the proton and opens the door to exploration of its other mechanical properties. The result has been published in Nature. Read more here .

ACCELERATOR SCIENCE / EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR PHYSICS
CEBAF: Spring 2018 Run Completed; Scheduled Shutdown Started
CEBAF continued delivering beam to four halls up to May 6 at 6 a.m. This marked the end of the first four hall operations in the 12 GeV era. The accelerator availability, post transformer repair in March, was the best to date in the 12 GeV era. The scheduled accelerator shutdown is in progress and will continue to mid-August. The immediate tasks included a cryogenic configuration change to maintain CEBAF at 2 Kelvin on one plant for maintenance work; this cryogenic configuration change was successful. Preparation work for cryomodule installation and helium processing, and work on many other tasks, is ongoing.

THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
This week, members of the Theory Center are holding the 2018 International Light Cone conference at Jefferson Lab. The topics that will be addressed during this conference include hadronic and partonic structure, meson and baryon spectroscopy, and few- and many-body physics. The conference will explore different methodologies that can be applied to these problems, including light-front field theories, lattice QCD, effective field theories, as well as phenomenological models, all of which will be relevant for understanding the physics explored in the Jefferson Lab 12 GeV era.

ESH&Q
Understanding Sun Protection Factor (SPF)
It is a popular misconception that, if you normally get a sunburn in one hour, then an SPF 15 sunscreen allows you to stay in the sun 15 hours (i.e., 15 times longer). This is not true. SPF is not directly related to time of solar exposure but to the amount. Although solar energy is related to exposure, other factors contribute, including intensity: one hour at 9 a.m could be the same as 15 minutes at 1 p.m. Generally, it takes less time to be exposed to the same amount of solar energy at midday compared to early morning or late evening. Solar intensity is also related to geographic location, with greater intensity occurring at lower latitudes. And, because clouds absorb solar energy, solar intensity is generally greater on clear days than cloudy days.

SPF ratings do allow consumers to compare the level of a product’s protection. For example, SPF 30 sunscreens provides more sunburn protection than SPF 8. For more information, see the U.S. Food & Drug Administration article .

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT & LOGISTICS
Power and Utility Outages near Experimental Halls for Transformer Oil Testing on May 21 -22
Facilities Management & Logistics personnel will be testing oil-filled transformers affecting buildings near Experimental Halls A, B and C on May 21 -22. Power to the affected buildings will be turned off promptly at 5 p.m. and is expected to be turned back on at 1 a.m. All building occupants are required to leave these buildings on May 21 -22 at no later than 5 p.m. For a complete list of affected buildings and more information, see the full memo .

Promptly Return Storage Bins to Property Management
Property Management provides bright yellow totes for office moves as a courtesy to JSA employees, subcontractors and Users to both allow for easier movement of items and damage protection for items during transport. While the totes may be used as temporary storage until the packed items may be appropriately arranged in a new space, these totes are not intended for permanent storage and must be returned to Property Management promptly for use by others as soon as feasible. If you have a tote that you've not yet emptied or have been using as storage, take the time to arrange for permanent storage of packed items and return the totes to Property Management as soon as possible. If you have any questions about Property requirements, email property at jlab.org .

Empty Cabinets/Desks/Lockers Before Property Movement
If you're moving to another space or are planning to excess any furniture with storage that you no longer need, remember to ensure that all of the drawers, shelves, etc. are empty prior to the planned move. This should be completed prior to your movement date or prior to submitting a request through the FM&L Work Request System for property excess or movement. Full file cabinets and lockers shift during movements and can be unnecessarily heavy, creating a safety issue for employees assigned to move or remove the property. If you have any questions about Property requirements, email property at jlab.org .
COMPUTING
Windows 10 Major Update Released during IT Systems Maintenance Period
The IT Division released the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (update 1709) to all Windwos 10 desktops and laptops during Tuesday 's maintenance period. As this is a major release, the download, installation and reboot takes some time, and the reboot of your system to finalize this patch installation could take as long as an hour. Plan your work accordingly, but ensure your system is patched no later than close of business on Friday, May 18 . If you have any questions or concerns about this update, contact the IT Division Help Desk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.

Where in the World... Are You From?
Help build our world map! The Jefferson Lab community is comprised of people from a plethora of places. In celebration of World Culture Day, the Diversity & Inclusion Council is building a visual map that depicts our collective hometowns. All members of the Jefferson Lab community are invited to stop by the CEBAF Center Lobby May 21 - June 1 to place a pin on the world map. There will also be notecards present for you to share a fun fact about your culture, region or hometown for display with the map. No time to stop by? Email your fact to Tara Tyndall . If you have any questions about Jefferson Lab's World Culture Day activity, contact dcouncil at jlab.org .
