2018 Open House Recap

Even the threat of severe weather couldn’t keep away the almost 6,000 community members who attended Jefferson Lab’s biennial open house event on Saturday, May 19 . Assisted by more than 350 volunteers, visitors from as far away as Arizona and Pennsylvania explored nearly all of the major facilities that were open to the public. Read more here .

THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
A new Joint Physics Analysis Center paper discusses the differences between several partial-wave analysis formalisms used in the construction of three-body decay amplitudes involving fermions. Specifically, the work analyzes the analytical properties of the decay Λb → ψ pK−, where the hidden charm pentaquark signal has previously been reported. The result is an amplitude with the minimal energy dependence that is compatible with S-matrix principles.

ESH&Q
Jefferson Lab Prepares for 2018 Hurricane Season
The forecast for the 2018 Atlantic Basin Hurricane Season, June 1 -Nov. 30, is for a total of 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. Jefferson Lab participates in observing this season by elevating its preparedness level to Hurricane Preparedness Condition 1 (HPC-1) on June 1 . Read the full memo for the actions expected of staff members, supervisors and Hurricane Wardens prior to the start of the season on June 1 .

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Jefferson Lab Mourns Loss of Colleague and Former Theory Center Director, Mike Pennington
As Associate Director of Jefferson Lab for Theoretical and Computational Physics from 2010–2016, Mike Pennington exercised major influence on the evolution of and trajectory of the Theoretical and Computational Physics group. He will be deeply missed by many at Jefferson Lab. Read more about Mike in a tribute penned by former Jefferson Lab Director, Hugh Montgomery.

Tornado Warning Siren Test Set for Friday, June 1 at 10:30 a.m.
Jefferson Lab's tornado warning siren will undergo its monthly operational test at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 1 . Don't respond to the siren; this is a test of the siren system and not a personnel response exercise. Individuals planning to be in the Central Materials Storage Area (where the siren is located) while the test is taking place must have with them and wear two layers of hearing protection.

Last Chance to Special Order 2018 Jefferson Lab T-shirt Design Merchandise
All orders are due no later than Monday, June 4 . Order forms can be picked up and submitted at the CEBAF Center front desk. In addition to the standard short sleeve cotton T-shirts, individuals can order long-sleeve shirts, women's V-neck, youth and both full-zip and pullover sweatshirt styles; samples of the special-order styles are on display in the lobby. No payment is required to place an order; payment is due when orders are available for pickup in about three weeks.

Two TIAA-CREF Individual Counseling Sessions Available on June 6
TIAA-CREF is offering Individual Counseling Sessions, where you can discuss with a consultant how to help you achieve your financial goals by investing in financial solutions, such as mutual funds, brokerage, life insurance and annuities. Two on-site appointments with a TIAA-CREF consultant remain open for June 6 . Appointments are also available for July 18 and Aug. 15. See the full memo for appointment scheduling and other information.

Enjoy Pizza and ”Inclusion Insights" at Special Lunch & Learn Sessions
Inclusion Insights is a powerful video presentation featuring Steve Robbins, the innovative speaker/socio-scientist storyteller who coined the phrase “Unintentional Intolerance.” Robbins has a resonating style and unique framework for addressing diversity and inclusion. Did we mention he's also very funny? Members of the Diversity & Inclusion Council will facilitate three small group lunchtime pizza sessions that will feature short video presentations by Robbins and group discussion. Advance signup is encouraged but not required. Space is limited, so sign up today for an upcoming session, on June 6 or June 20 , in the Learning Management System . Sessions will be held in CEBAF Center room F226, 11:30 a.m.-1p.m. Pizza will be provided, and participants are encouraged to bring their own beverage.

Reminder: Open House Surveys and Photos
If you have not done so already, take some time to complete the 2018 Open House Volunteer Survey on SurveyMonkey; the survey closes July 1 . Another survey, just for visitors, is also still open. In addition, you can now check out photos from the event in the Jefferson Lab Open House flickr album. See the full memo for the links.
