Energy Efficient Upgrade Garners DOE Award
A Jefferson Lab team was honored at the 2018 Federal Energy and Water Management Award Ceremony for upgrades to the lab’s data center. Read more here .
THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
A new study uses chiral effective field theory to derive nuclear interactions and electromagnetic currents for magnetic form factors and photo- and electro-disintegration cross sections. The currents are characterized by three low-energy constants, which are constrained by reproducing the magnetic moments of the deuteron and trinucleons. The calculated magnetic form factors of A=2 and 3 nuclei and deuteron threshold electrodisintegration at backward angles are in excellent agreement with experimental data at low values of momentum transfer, where chiral effective field theory is expected to be valid.

Safety Data Sheets
Jefferson Lab recognizes that safety data sheets (SDSs) are a key source of information relating to hazardous chemicals. They have a structured format and are designed to provide both workers and emergency personnel the proper procedures for handling or working with hazardous substances. While SDSs are of particular use if a spill or other accident occurs, they reflect the hazards and mitigation for working with the material in an occupational fashion. Jefferson Lab maintains a database of SDSs for products used onsite .
The Household Products Database by the U.S. National Library of Medicine is also a terrific resource for consumers to educate themselves on the hazards of consumer products.
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT & LOGISTICS
Property Passes Required for Computers Taken Off-Site
Reminder: If you plan to take a DOE-owned computer off of the facility campus, you are required to have an approved Property Pass . You can simply and quickly apply for a pass at the link. Once you have filled out the information, be sure to click "SUBMIT." If you click "SAVE," the property pass form will not be submitted for approval.
Disposing of Excess Items and Furniture
If you have Excess items, do not bring them to the Stockroom for re-use. Instead, submit a movement (relocation/transfer/excess) via the Property search page . Also, remember never to throw out old furniture. Instead, submit a movement to have the furniture picked up or contact Property Disposal Specialist Jermaine Draughn, who can help with the required paperwork. Draughn is located in the Experimental Equipment Lab (EEL, Bldg. 90) in room 108. He can be reached at x7348 or 757-303-0112 .
COMPUTING
Jefferson Lab Home File Server Outage Set for Nov. 26, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
The IT Division is planning a major outage of the home file server (/home and J: drive) for Monday , Nov. 26, starting at 5:30 p.m. During this time, the Windows J: drive and Common User Environment Linux /home directory will be unavailable. This means that logins to central and CUE-managed Linux servers will hang and not complete. In addition, logins to Windows Terminal servers will be unavailable during the outage. The home directory file server should be back online no later than 8:30 p.m. If you have any questions about the transition, contact the IT Division Help Desk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.
GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Jefferson Lab Salutes Military Veterans on Monday , Nov. 12
In recognition of Veterans Day (observed), Jefferson Lab invites former staff military service veterans to enjoy a cupcake and sign the service honor sheet in the CEBAF Center lobby, 11:30-1 p.m. A group photo of military veterans will be taken at 1 p.m. in the CEBAF Center lobby. Full participation of our veterans is highly encouraged for this group photo. Cupcakes will be delivered to the MCC conference room after 1 p.m. to accommodate veterans working on the Accelerator Site who are not able to get to CEBAF Center. If you have any questions about this activity, contact Mike Robbins , x7617.
United Way Raffle Results Reminder
The results of the United Way Raffle have been posted to Insight. At this time, three of the raffle items have been claimed, and one more prize remains. Should that prize not be claimed today , a new number will be drawn and posted to Insight on Thursday , Nov. 7. For more information, see the full memo .
Animal Shelter Donation Drive
Jefferson Lab's Safety Wardens are coming together to sponsor an animal shelter donation drive to help animals affected by recent hurricanes. To participate, deposit your items in one of the collection boxes by Dec. 7, located in the Machine Control Center (Bldg. 85), Counting House (Bldg. 97), Support Service Center (Bldg. 28), Technology and Engineering Development Bldg. (Bldg. 55) and the Test Lab (Bldg. 58). Donations will benefit local animal shelters. If you have any questions about the drive, contact Tina Menefee .
