Seminar: Avoid, Deny, Defend for Your Life

There have been nearly 300 mass murder attempts in the U.S. in 2018. In the Oct. 24 lunchtime seminar, “Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events,” Sergeant Randy Cupp of the Newport News Police Department offered a brief history of mass shooting events, a look at the psychology of shooters and survivors, and a proven plan for your best chance of survival in these situations. A model is built based on approximate three-body unitary with free parameters fixed by fitting to the ALEPH data on τ- → π-π+π- ντ decay. The analytic continuation of the amplitude to the complex energy plane is then performed to extract the a1(1260) pole position.

Candle Safety
If you put up your holiday decorations this month, be especially careful with your candles. Better yet, use flameless candles, which now come with remote controls, scents, timers, rechargeable batteries and in many different sizes. According to the National Fire Protection Association, candle fires increase during the winter holidays, because people burn candles more, and they burn them near decorations. When you use real candles, follow these safety tips:

  *   Keep candles at least 12 inches from anything that can burn.
  *   Keep candles out of the reach of children and never leave a child unattended in a room with a candle.
  *   Use sturdy candleholders that won’t easily tip over.
  *   Put candles out before they burn down completely to the holder or container.
  *   Never use a candle in a home where anyone uses an oxygen tank.

SSC Rear Parking Lot Closed Through December
All parking in the rear of the Support Service Center Bldg. (Bldg. 28) is now closed to allow installation of concrete islands and re-coating of the existing paving. Construction work will continue through the end of December 2018. Building exit doors to this area will be marked emergency exit only. Pedestrian access from the SSC to CEBAF Center will be available from the west end of SSC (end nearest the ARC Building) along the existing sidewalk. COMPUTING
Jefferson Lab Home File Server Outage Set for Nov. 26, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
The IT Division is planning a major outage of the home file server (/home and J: drive) for Monday, Nov. 26, starting at 5:30 p.m. During this time, the Windows J: drive and Common User Environment Linux /home directory will be unavailable. This means that logins to central and CUE-managed Linux servers will hang and not complete. In addition, logins to Windows Terminal servers will be unavailable during the outage. Colloquium: What Happens When You Build The World’s Largest Microscope and Point It At… Nothing?
The Large Hadron Collider at CERN is the world's largest and most energetic particle collider. It began operating in 2009 and now has approximately 2,000 papers published based on this data. Thomas LeCompte, Argonne National Lab, will attempt to put this in context and discuss the relevant ideas and themes, paying particular attention to what the LHC is telling us about the non-trivial nature of the vacuum and some of its more interesting features. The presentation is set for Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 3 p.m. in the CEBAF Center auditorium.
