Preserving the Past and Planning for the Future

In a lab where every detail could be historically relevant, the Jefferson Lab History Archives Program captures the past for future audiences. Read more here .

THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
The parton distribution functions (PDFs) encode important nonperturbative information of hadron structure and strong interaction dynamics. A proof of the multiplicative renormalizability of quasi-quark PDFs has been extended to quasi-gluon PDFs , demonstrating that quasi-gluon PDFs can be multiplicatively renormalized to all orders in perturbation theory, without mixing with other operators. With the multiplicative renormalizability of both quasi-quark and quasi-gluon PDFs proved, and QCD collinear factorization of quasi-PDFs into PDFs verified, a solid theoretical foundation has now been established for extracting PDFs from lattice QCD calculated quasi-PDFs.

ESH&Q
Avoiding Unintended Amputations
According to OSHA, thousands of workers lose fingers, hands, feet and other body parts each year, mostly through compression, crushing, or by getting them caught between or struck by objects. High-Risk Activity amputations occur most often when using rotating, hydraulic or leverage-force equipment that is unguarded or inadequately safeguarded. Jefferson Lab has determined that use of this type of equipment carries an unmitigated Risk Code 3 , and an Operational Safety Procedure is written for each machine tool and read by operators prior to use. For more information, see ES&H Manual Chapter 6121 Machine Tools .

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT & LOGISTICS
Timely Notification of Shipping Requests Encouraged
This is a reminder to all members of the Jefferson Lab community that Shipping Requests should be submitted as early as possible, especially for items being shipped internationally. Getting your request in early allows time for the completion of these necessary steps before the shipment may proceed:

    * Price comparisons: It is incumbent on the shipper to attempt to find the best price and means to ship items, which requires additional time for response from multiple vendors.
    * Export control checks: These must be completed, even for domestic shipments, and an incomplete Export Control section will delay the item shipment.
If you have any questions about shipping items, contact Mike Gelhaar, x7854.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Virginia Begins Offering REAL ID Compliant Driver’s Licenses
Virginians now have the option to upgrade to a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or identification card. Two years from now, in October of 2020, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will enforce all REAL ID driver's license requirements for all states, and only a license compliant with REAL ID will be accepted as identification for domestic airline flights and to enter federal buildings. For information about how this change will affect the Jefferson Lab community, see the full staff memo .

Admin Manual Update: Changes Made to Business Meals and Refreshments Subsection
The Jefferson Lab Administrative Manual has now been updated with a new policy regarding allowable and unallowable business meals and refreshments. Subsection E of Administrative Manual Section 104 Meetings and Conferences states that meals and refreshments may be provided to participants of lab-sponsored meetings and conferences that meet all of the provided criteria and are coordinated in advance through Event Services. The full policy may be reviewed at the link.

American Red Cross Blood Drive Set for Oct. 19
Tn American Red Cross Blood Drive is scheduled to take place at Jefferson Lab on Oct. 19. The drive will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in CEBAF Center room F113. New and repeat donors are encouraged to attend. Walk-ins are welcome. For eligibility requirements and to schedule an appointment with sponsor code "TJNAF" - visit the American Red Cross webpage . For more information, contact Johnie Banks at x7539 or jbanks at jlab.org .

Veterans Invited to Submit Info for Veterans Day Salute
In recognition of Veterans Day, veterans of military service are invited to submit a photo of themselves in uniform for inclusion in a display in CEBAF Center. If you would like to submit your photo or provide a new photo, submit the image along with your full name, branch of service and years of service to Mike Robbins at mrobbins at jlab.org by Nov. 2. For more information, see the full memo .

CONTACT
The JLab Weekly provides information on the status of safety, accelerator operations, experiments, reviews, upcoming activities and special events. Deadline for submission is every Tuesday by 10 a.m. Submit new items to: the Communications Office or contact Kandice Carter at x7263.
