THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
Predictions for future high-energy cross section measurements depend on our knowledge of the uncertainties on the underlying partonic distribution functions. However, the correlations of contributions of the various functions also play a significant role. A new paper considers the Sivers transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution and Collins TMD fragmentation function to show how these correlations influence the predictions for the Sivers asymmetry in Drell-Yan lepton-pair production and the Collins asymmetry in electron-positron annihilation.

ESH&Q
National Fire Prevention Week
Every year, the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) surveys a sample of United States public fire departments in order to project national estimates of the U.S. fire problem. Based on the data from their 2017 survey, they estimate that public fire departments in the U.S. responded to 1,319,500 fires, resulting in an estimated 3,400 civilian deaths, nearly 15,000 civilian injuries, and $23 billion in property loss. The National Fire Protection Association website offers a variety of Safety Tip Sheets to help prevent fire.

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT & LOGISTICS
Reminder: Use Recycling and Refuse Bins Only for UnTagged/Unmarked Rubbish
Before disposing of nonworking or outdated equipment items - which may include furniture, chargers, meters and pumps - remember to check the equipment for property markings. If an item has a circuit board, a numbered F-tag, a U.S. DOE Property sticker, or if you are unsure of how to dispose of the item, then it should be excessed by filling out an Excess Request Form ; Property personnel will then assist with the request. If you need assistance in determining proper disposal, contact Property personnel at x7348, x7025 or x5682 for guidance.

Pallets, trash and metal scrap can be disposed of in the appropriate bin without contacting Property Management. Pallets may be placed in the wood dumpster in the Central Material Storage Area; Contact Mike Lewellen if the bin is full.

COMPUTING
IT Division Maintenance Period Set for Tuesday , Oct. 16
The IT Division is planning a systems maintenance window on Oct. 16, 5-10 p.m. During this maintenance window, Symantec Endpoint Protection on Windows systems will be upgraded; This update may require a reboot, so plan on rebooting your system by the end of the week. In addition, Windows and Linux patches will be released to all desktops and servers. Server systems will be rebooted overnight in order to finalize patch installation, so there will be short and intermittent service outages overnight while these systems are rebooted. If you have any questions or concerns about this maintenance window, contact the IT Division Help Desk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.

Support Begins Soon for macOS 10.14 on Managed Systems and Support Ends for macOS 10.11
The IT Division will begin to officially support the latest version of macOS (10.14, Mojave) on Oct. 17. It will also be available for installation on this day. Depending on your current version of macOS, you may be prompted to complete extra steps before being permitted to upgrade. These steps should be completed while on-site and connected to a lab network. The installation should take roughly 45 to 60 minutes to complete, depending on the current version of macOS that you are running. The IT Division will drop support for El Capitan (macOS 10.11) in February 2019 . Personnel running 10.11 or earlier are encouraged to contact the IT Division Help Desk to see about upgrading to a supported version as soon as possible. If you have any questions or concerns about the upgrade process, contact the IT Division Help Desk at helpdesk at jlab.org or x7155.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Laboratory Directed Research and Development Poster Session Set for Oct. 12, noon-1 p.m.
Principal Investigators on FY2018 projects will present posters summarizing their projects and will be available to discuss their work in the CEBAF Center Atrium on Friday , Oct. 12, noon-1 p.m. New projects for FY2019 will also be announced. For more information, see the full staff memo .

Last Chance: Registration Underway for 2018 Fall Golf Tournament
The Jefferson Lab Golf League has announced its 2018 Fall tournament, which will be held on Friday , Oct. 19, at the Williamsburg National Golf Club (Jamestown Course). To enter, your foursome must include at least two Jefferson Lab employees. Registration deadline is Monday , Oct. 15. For more information, see the JAG Golf League webpage .

Colloquium: Physics from the Gravitational and Electromagnetic Waves of a Neutron Star Merger
The recent detection of gravitational waves and associated electromagnetic emission from a binary neutron star merger has illuminated the physics of strong gravity and dense matter and has addressed long standing questions as to the origin of the heaviest elements in the universe. Daniel Kasen — University of California, Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab — will review our physical understanding of compact object mergers and will describe how observations of gravitational waves, high-energy photons and radioactively powered optical emission have important physical implications, including constraints on the speed of gravity, the equation of state of nuclear matter, and the nucleosynthesis of the heavy elements. The event will take place in the CEBAF Center Auditorium on Oct. 17 at 3 p.m.

Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events Lunchtime Seminar Offered on Oct. 24
The ESH&Q Division is offering a free lunchtime seminar to anyone who is interested in receiving guidance and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event. The Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events seminar, or C.R.A.S.E., is built on the Avoid, Deny, Defend strategy and will be led by representatives of Newport News Police and Newport News Emergency Management. The seminar will be offered on Oct. 24 at noon in the CEBAF Center Auditorium. Advance registration is not required. Bring your own lunch for this 75-minute course. For more information about the seminar, contact Tina Menefee .

JAG Tailgate Set for Wednesday , Oct. 24
Jefferson Lab employees and users are invited to the Jefferson Activities Group Tailgate scheduled for Oct. 24, 3-6 p.m., in the field behind the SURA Residence Facility. The Tailgate will feature refreshments and games for all ages, as well as the Homebrew Competition. You are encouraged to wear your favorite team's colors (whatever the sport) and sturdy shoes. In order to make this event a success, the JAG committee needs volunteers to help with setup, food and drink service, drink bracelets and clean up. Volunteer positions are posted on the JAG webpage . For more information about the event, see the full staff memo .

The Jefferson Lab 2019 Holiday Calendar Has Now Been Posted
The Jefferson Lab closure dates for calendar year 2019 has been posted to the Human Resources website . In addition, you can find upcoming holidays for both 2018 and 2019 on the At-A-Glance calendar .

Vacation Donation Program a Success!
The Human Resources department is pleased to announce that at the conclusion of the vacation donation enrollment, 616 vacation hours had been donated. Once again, the laboratory will be able to provide financial assistance to the very grateful employees that qualify for the program. Human Resources extends a thank you to Jefferson Science Associates employees for their generous support!
