THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
The Joint Physics Analysis Center (JPAC) has extended its hadron spectroscopy analysis to include the phenomenological description of three-particle reactions . Within the isobar approximation, the connected part of the 3 → 3 amplitude is first expressed as a sum over initial and final pairs and then is expanded into a truncated partial wave series. The analytic structure of the resulting unitarity equation is discussed, and analogies are made with formalisms for extracting 3->3 scattering amplitudes in lattice QCD.

Laser Safety at Jefferson Lab
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, LASER is an acronym that stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The laser produces an intense, highly directional beam of light. The human body is vulnerable to the output of certain lasers, and under certain circumstances, exposure can result in damage to the eye and skin. The most common cause of laser-induced tissue damage is thermal in nature, where the tissue proteins are denatured due to the temperature rise following absorption of laser energy. ES&H Manual Chapter 6410 Laser Safety Program addresses hazard mitigation and preventive measures for laser use here at Jefferson Lab.
GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Lab Community Invited to Watch DOE Employee Town Hall Today at Noon
Under Secretary for Science Paul Dabbar will visit DOE’s Germantown campus on Wednesday , Oct. 17, and lead a town hall-style conversation in the main auditorium there, noon-1 p.m. Dabbar will provide an update on activities in the S4 portfolio and respond to questions. The town hall will be broadcast live in the CEBAF Center Auditorium for interested members of the Jefferson Lab community.
Today 's Colloquium: Physics from the Gravitational and Electromagnetic Waves of a Neutron Star Merger
The recent detection of gravitational waves and associated electromagnetic emission from a binary neutron star merger has illuminated the physics of strong gravity and dense matter and has addressed long standing questions as to the origin of the heaviest elements in the universe. Daniel Kasen — University of California, Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab - will review our physical understanding of compact object mergers and will describe how observations of gravitational waves, high-energy photons and radioactively powered optical emission have important physical implications, including constraints on the speed of gravity, the equation of state of nuclear matter, and the nucleosynthesis of the heavy elements. The event will take place in the CEBAF Center Auditorium on Oct. 17 at 3 p.m.

Make an Impact on a Young Mind: Be a BEAMS Role Model
Local 5th grade students participating in Jefferson Lab’s Becoming Enthusiastic About Math and Science program will begin their visits to the laboratory for hands-on science and positive interaction this month. To help open the door to STEM careers for these future scientists, the Science Education group is seeking volunteers to interact with the kids in short Role Model visits for the 2018-2019 school year. Business Travel Reminder: Travel Arranged by Another Institution
JSA staff are reminded that all business travel, even when arranged and paid for by another institution, requires an approved JSA Travel Authorization. When such travel is to a destination outside the United States, a country clearance and DOE Foreign Management System (FTMS) approval are also required. Employees electing to travel without an approved travel authorization or to a foreign country without FTMS approval are assumed to be on personal travel, must charge their time to vacation or LWOP if their vacation is exhausted, and may not charge time to the DOE contract. If you have any questions about this reminder, contact Travel Services at travels at jlab.org .
In the News: More Gluons in the Pion
The American Physical Society’s Physics website has published a synopsis on a recent paper published in Physical Review Letters. The paper, which features a combined analysis of collider data, found that the gluon contribution to the pion is three times larger than thought.

The next Publications Refresher Course will take place Tuesday , Oct. 23, at 3:30 p.m. in TED Bldg. Room 2559.
