Nuclear Physics Tech Monitors Cancer Treatments
Nearly a half-million cancer patients are treated with radiation therapy every year in the U.S. Now, nuclear physics tech is helping to ensure patients receive just what the doctor ordered. Read more here .
EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR PHYSICS
Updated Experiment Run Schedule Posted
Due to several difficulties during beam restoration and re-start of the physics program, an updated run schedule for the remainder of calendar year 2018 has now been issued. You can find both the short- and long-term schedules posted on the Jefferson Lab website .
THEORETICAL AND COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS
A combination of the strange-quark electromagnetic form factors from lattice QCD and (anti)neutrino-nucleon neutral-current elastic scattering cross sections from the MiniBooNE experiment has allowed the most precise prediction of the weak neutral-current axial form factor for 0 < Q 2 < 1 GeV 2 . As a check of the calculation, a successful reconstruction is made of the independent (anti)neutrino-nucleon scattering cross section data from Brookhaven National Lab. This calculation can have a significant impact on disentangling nuclear effects in the analysis of data from upcoming neutrino-nucleus scattering experiments.
ESH&Q
Field Changes to Operational Safety Procedures
After an Operational Safety Procedure (OSP) is reviewed, approved and posted in the field, a minor change may be discovered that would make the procedure work more effectively. In the past, an OSP would be resubmitted for review to all Subject Matter Experts and approved by all authorities before the revision could be issued. As of September 2018 , minor field changes can now be made to approved OSPs. The new process for field changes is outlined in ES&H Manual Chapter 3310 Appendix T1 Operational Safety Procedure (OSP) & Temporary Operational Safety Procedure (TOSP) Instructions Section 4.9 OSP Field Changes .
If you have a recommendation for an OSP update, notify the OSP Document Owner’s Supervisor, who will initiate an appropriate determination. For more information, contact Harry Fanning , x7619.
GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Reminder: Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events Lunchtime Seminar Offered Today
The ESH&Q Division is offering a free lunchtime seminar to anyone who is interested in receiving guidance and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event. The Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events seminar, or C.R.A.S.E., is built on the Avoid, Deny, Defend strategy and will be led by representatives of Newport News Police and Newport News Emergency Management. The seminar will be offered on Oct. 24 at noon in the CEBAF Center Auditorium. Advance registration is not required. Bring your own lunch for this 75-minute course. For more information about the seminar, contact Tina Menefee .
JAG Tailgate Party Takes Place Today !
Jefferson Lab employees and Users are invited to the Jefferson Lab Activities Group Tailgate scheduled for Oct. 24, 3-6 p.m., in the field behind the SURA Residence Facility. The Tailgate will feature refreshments and games for all ages, as well as the Homebrew Competition. You are encouraged to wear your favorite team's colors (whatever the sport) and sturdy shoes. For more information about the event, see the full staff memo .
TIAA-CREF Offers Resources for National Retirement Security Week
This week is National Retirement Security Week, and you can observe it this year by reviewing your retirement savings strategy. TIAA-CREF offers a variety of resources and financial planning tools that can assist you in managing your financial goals for the future. Sign up today for the last on-site individual counseling sessions in 2018 offered on Dec. 12, or check out other in-person and by-phone individual consultation opportunities on the TIAA-CREF website. Webinars are also available to access anytime, and they feature a wide variety of topics, from college savings planning to the basic principles of investing. To see the full list of webinars, including upcoming live webinars and those available to view on demand, visit the TIAA-CREF website . Note that Adobe Flash Player must be enabled in your browser to view the webinars. If you have questions about the JSA-sponsored TIAA-CREF retirement plan, contact Treva Ferguson at x7291.
How to Curate your Research Papers in INSPIRE
Attend this brief overview to learn how to manage your papers in INSPIRE, including claiming papers on which you are an author and removing papers from your repository that do not belong to you. The overview will be offered on Wednesday , Oct. 31, in CEBAF Center room F224-225. If you plan to attend, R.S.V.P. to Kim Edwards by COB on Tuesday , Oct. 30.
Colloquium: Radiation Belt Remediation Using Space-Based Antennas and Electron Beams
Relativistic electrons can oscillate above the Earth, trapped in the Van Allen Belts. These electrons, which can originate from the solar wind or a high-altitude nuclear explosion, have the potential to damage satellites in low-Earth orbit. Bruce Carlsten, Los Alamos National Lab, will will provide an overview of the radiation belts and their electron distribution, as well as approaches to draining electrons from the belts with high-power very-low frequency waves using either antennas or relativistic electron beams in space. The presentation will take place Oct. 31 at 4 p.m. in the CEBAF Center Auditorium.
Last Chance: Veterans Invited to Submit Info for Veterans Day Salute
In recognition of Veterans Day, veterans of military service are invited to submit a photo of themselves in uniform for inclusion in a display in CEBAF Center. If you would like to submit your photo or provide a new photo, submit the image along with your full name, branch of service and years of service to Mike Robbins by Nov. 2. For more information, see the full memo .
Community Coding Camp Offered for Middle School-Aged Girls on Nov. 3
TECHSTERS is a free, half-day coding camp for middle school-aged girls with a mission to inspire a future generation to discover technology, get excited about STEM, and build code for real-world applications. For more information, see the announcement on We Hear That .
