HALL D UPDATES
The results of the J/psi-production measurement by the GlueX collaboration have been featured as an Editor's Suggestion in Physical Review Letters (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__journals.aps.org_prl_abstract_10.1103_PhysRevLett.123.072001&d=DwIFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=huYtXgHboamQCcudwMT5oQ&m=pnSTbea4Geio4X6nrTf_bnJ_FP2rwKGlV2_R6u_wP0E&s=0W8YbuchuHlorx7imkepmUdOnle4TAO_p3FSC1rRgGs&e= ) . The measurement featured near-threshold J/psi photoproduction, which probes the high-momentum gluons in the proton. The GlueX results point to a high density of such gluons, a phenomenon previously cited in a theoretical paper (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.sciencedirect.com_science_article_pii_S0375947499850908-3Fvia-253Dihub&d=DwIFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=huYtXgHboamQCcudwMT5oQ&m=pnSTbea4Geio4X6nrTf_bnJ_FP2rwKGlV2_R6u_wP0E&s=IbuoBltgG6fh2_NsDg9c_VksZLz_eiQ3x-I_blQ2hf0&e= ) as an indication of a large gluonic contribution to the proton mass. Also, the results allow nuclear physicists to set important limits on the nature of the pentaquark states reported by the LHCb experiment at CERN.

------------------------------------------------------------
THREE RELATIVISTIC PARTICLES IN A FINITE VOLUME
A new paper (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__arxiv.org_abs_arXiv-3A1908.02411&d=DwIFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=huYtXgHboamQCcudwMT5oQ&m=pnSTbea4Geio4X6nrTf_bnJ_FP2rwKGlV2_R6u_wP0E&s=Xs9nQXUjd-xBIsp4MEMHKkCDB7PTF8_FzyyNM-ue0qA&e= ) presents a general, relativistic framework for studying three-hadron systems accommodating resonant or bound subsystems. This is necessary for future lattice QCD calculations of three-body systems, but it can also be used for studying scattering amplitudes of such systems given some suitable model. The paper illustrates this by determining the scattering amplitudes of a three-nucleon toy-model below threshold, where a triton-like bound state is recovered, as well as known nontrivial features of the deuteron-nucleon phase shifts.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE TRAINING: TWO-PART COURSES IN SEPT.
The National Fire Protection Association will highlight best practices and procedural requirements in an effort to eliminate electrical shock hazards at the lab. The NFPA will train employees to identify and understand the relationship between electrical hazards, what to do in the case of an injury, and how to determine who is qualified to operate certain equipment. Attendees must complete both courses (SAF603N1 on Sept. 18 or 19 (https://www.jlab.org/nfpa-70-e-standard-electrical-safety-workplace-2018) and SAF603N2 on Sept. 25 or 26 (https://www.jlab.org/nfpa-70e-standard-electrical-safety-workplace) ) to receive course credit. For questions, contact Tish Creery (mailto:creery at jlab.org) at x7567.

LINUX PATCHES AND REBOOTS TONIGHT AUG. 21
The IT Division was unable to release Linux patches to servers and desktops during last night's maintenance period due to software complications. Updates will be released tonight, Aug. 21. Accordingly, there will be some interruption to core user experience systems and services overnight while servers are patched and rebooted. All systems and services will be back up and functional no later than tomorrow, Aug. 22 at 7 a.m. As a reminder, please plan on rebooting your CUE-managed Linux desktop no later than Friday, Aug. 23, by close of business. For questions, contact the IT Division Help Desk (mailto:helpdesk at jlab.org) at x7155.

COMPUTER USER AUDIT AUG. 26
On Monday, Aug. 26, the IT Division will begin a computer user account audit. All supervisors and sponsors of staff, Users and contractors with Jefferson Lab computer accounts are required to review and re-authorize accounts. This audit is a critical part of maintaining an appropriate level of cybersecurity at the lab. Once the audit begins, the IT Division will send emails to supervisors and sponsors with instructions on how to complete their audit. The audit must be completed by close of business Friday, Sept. 27. For questions, contact the IT Division Help Desk (mailto:helpdesk at jlab.org) at x7155.

HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER HONORS
PROGRAM IS BACK
After a three-year hiatus, the STEM-focused high school internship program (https://www.jlab.org/news/stories/jefferson-lab-high-school-summer-honors-program-back) returned to the lab campus this summer. Students were given real-world projects that supported the mentor’s department initiatives for an authentic experience. The assignments spanned a wide range of activities, including programming, taking measurements, testing hardware, data collection and result analysis.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor, click here (https://www.jlab.org/memo/mentorship-program-seeking-volunteer-mentors) . For questions, contact Carol McKisson (mailto:carolm at jlab.org) at x7560.

WORKSHOP: STRONG QCD FROM HADRON STRUCTURE EXPERIMENTS NOV. 6-9
The workshop will focus on properties of the hadron and nuclei and their emergence from strong QCD. The goal is to explore new horizons in the structure of ground and excited hadrons, 3-D femto-imaging and spectroscopy. Topics include:
- 1-D and 3-D structure of ground and excited hadrons.
- Mass, momentum and pressure distributions in hadrons.
- Hadron spectroscopy and new hadron states.
- QCD-based frameworks for the description of hadron spectroscopy and structure.
- Science opportunities for the Electron-Ion Collider.
