JSA Names Graduate Fellowship Awardees
Jefferson Science Associates has awarded nine doctoral students graduate fellowships for the 2019 - 2020 academic year. To read the full article, please click here (https://www.jlab.org/news/releases/jsa-awards-graduate-fellowships-research-jefferson-lab-1) .
EFFICIENT FOURIER TRANSFORMS FOR TMD PARTON DISTRIBUTIONS
Studies of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions, which describe the three-dimensional structure of the nucleon, are one of the major goals of the Jefferson Lab 12 GeV program. While a large amount of theoretical developments based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics have been carried out in the past, new challenges emerge when TMDs are extracted in the context of global QCD analysis. In particular, the TMD theory calculations involve Bessel transforms that are computationally expensive, with standard numerical integration methods such as adaptive quadrature or Monte Carlo techniques. A new paper (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__arxiv.org_abs_1906.05949&d=DwIFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=huYtXgHboamQCcudwMT5oQ&m=-XiaBPSGm9ExJW-7VxEqGl_76GSV1sOS9kEbuu-vmtY&s=YvHel4B1J6gL3MmJNGNKenBwWHJ4elt8pzqYvJr20JI&e= ) describes the development of a fast, two-dimensional numerical Fourier transform algorithm that can improve the numerical accuracy of TMD calculations and boost the efficiency of global QCD analysis of TMDs.

PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR
The Occupational Safety Health Administration requires employers to provide their workers with appropriate eye protection for hazardous work environments. According to these standards, you should always wear properly fitted protective eyewear when:
* Doing or observing work that may produce particles, slivers or dust from materials like wood, metal, plastic, cement and drywall.
* Hammering, sanding or grinding.
* Working with power tools, chemicals, or wet and powdered cement.
* Welding.

For guidelines on protective eyewear and other protective gear, visit the ESH&Q manual (https://www.jlab.org/ehs/ehsmanual/manual/6620.html) .

SOFTWARE UPDATES - JULY 16
The IT division is planning a maintenance period on Tuesday, July 16, from 5 - 8 p.m. During this maintenance, updates to core Common User Experience software, such as Firefox and Adobe Flash, will be released to all desktops and servers. Windows and Linux patches will also be released to all CUE-managed desktops and servers. There will be short outages of central services overnight while central servers are rebooted to finalize patch installation. Please reboot your Windows or Linux desktop by Friday, July 19, in order to finish the install of patches. Contact the IT Division Help Desk (mailto:helpdesk at jlab.org) at x7155 if you have questions.
CENTRAL LOGIN SERVER UPDATES - JULY 16
The Jefferson Lab central login servers, jlabl1-4, will be updated to RHEL7 during the IT division maintenance period, Tuesday, July 16. At 5:30 p.m., the current RHEL6 versions will be turned off and replaced by new, RHEL7 systems. Jlabl1-4 is expected to be updated no later than 6 p.m. Contact the IT Division Help Desk (mailto:helpdesk at jlab.org) at x7155 if you have questions.

SRF POSTER SESSIONS - NEW DATE - JULY 17
The Superconducting Radiofrequency Poster Session has been rescheduled to Wednesday, July 17, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the CEBAF Center atrium. The 30 posters were originally presented at the 19th International Conference on RF Superconductivity (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__srf2019.org_&d=DwIFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=huYtXgHboamQCcudwMT5oQ&m=-XiaBPSGm9ExJW-7VxEqGl_76GSV1sOS9kEbuu-vmtY&s=VSZhmeeHPfZjvcJavhyfurOJLfP34V8GHNeRCwAgE_k&e= ) in Dresden, Germany, earlier this month. For more information, click here (https://misportal.jlab.org/ul/calendar/show_single_event.cfm?id=5542) .

MACHINE LEARNING PROBLEM OF THE QUARTER - JULY 17
The Machine Learning Lunch Series has concluded its first problem of the quarter. Seven different models vied to measure the angle and starting position of fictitious particles traveling though a mock detector. Participants approached the problem differently to varying degrees of success.

Presentations from the winners, Adam Carpenter and Evan McClellan, as well as from David Lawrence on his solution, will occur Wednesday, July 17, at noon in CEBAF Center room F324-325. Interested parties are welcome to join in the fun, congratulate the winners and learn when the next problem will be announced! Questions? Contact Thomas Britton (mailto:tbritton at jlab.org) at x7624.

BIG DATA ANALYTICS & MACHINE LEARNING WORKSHOP - AUG. 6 - 7
On Aug. 6 - 7, from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., Jefferson Lab will host the Big Data Analytics & Machine Learning monthly workshop in CEBAF Center room F113. The two-day, hands-on workshop will introduce scalable data analytics and machine learning using Hadoop, Spark and TensorFlow. For more information and to register, click here (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__psc.edu_current-2Dworkshop&d=DwIFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=huYtXgHboamQCcudwMT5oQ&m=-XiaBPSGm9ExJW-7VxEqGl_76GSV1sOS9kEbuu-vmtY&s=UUjKRimet9655Ce1g4zvJyeVIv7JveNH0ORjXWH5wrk&e= ) .

BLOOD DRIVE - AUG. 9
The American Red Cross Blood Drive has returned to the lab campus! Save a life (or several!) by donating blood Friday, Aug. 9, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. in CEBAF Center room F113. New and repeat donors are encouraged to attend, and walk-ins are always welcome. To see if you are eligible to donate, click here (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.redcrossblood.org_donating-2Dblood_eligibility-2Drequirements&d=DwIFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=huYtXgHboamQCcudwMT5oQ&m=-XiaBPSGm9ExJW-7VxEqGl_76GSV1sOS9kEbuu-vmtY&s=ZPtKXHRpK81l-1IdbeI_7HMNCrBTso07lzj6wfeOKgw&e= ) . ACCELERATING AROUND THE WORLD
A few weeks ago, you may have noticed quite the hubbub around the lab campus. Inspired by the annual World Culture Day on May 21, the Diversity and Inclusion Council hosted kiosks around campus inviting the community to share where in the world they are from.

The event garnered 335 pins depicting names, fun facts and photos of staff and User hometowns. Peep the map in all its glory here (https://www.jlab.org/human_resources/diversity/initiatives/worldcultureday19) .

CHA-CHA-CHA-CHANGES
If you log into Insights, you may notice some updates under the Popular Applications column on the right hand side of your screen. The webmaster has removed some broken links and re-alphabetized some categories, such as "Logos", to streamline accessibility and increase efficiency. The Communications Office hopes to continue making minor improvements to improve workflow and appearance of our internal website. For questions, please contact the webmaster (mailto:webmaster at jlab.org) at x7731.
