A SPARK-Tacular Program To Keep Students Learning All Summer Long

Jefferson Lab reaffirms their commitment to the SPARK program (https://www.jlab.org/news/stories/spark-tacular-program-keep-students-learning-all-summer-long) in order to combat students' summer slide during the warmer months.
POWER CORRECTIONS IN SEMI-INCLUSIVE DEEP INELASTIC SCATTERING
The COMPASS collaboration at CERN published data on the charged-hadron production cross sections in lepton-hadron semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. The data revealed that when the observed hadron momentum is large, the measured cross sections are an order of magnitude higher than the next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics calculations. A new paper (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__arxiv.org_abs_1907.06136&d=DwIFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=huYtXgHboamQCcudwMT5oQ&m=CwELNDGF4peknuYTWSBXL_XM3vjNzJnpJWLgKGHVgwM&s=Yer8X5gL9nB5Hqsiyajn09gOVCo62s2i485MMQggu8Y&e= ) demonstrates that the power corrections are extremely important for the data when the final-state multiplicity is low and the production kinematics are near the edge of phase space. The findings suggest the need for more detailed studies on power corrections for upcoming experiments at Jefferson Lab, as well as the future Electron-Ion Collider.

ALL-HANDS SAFETY MEETING REMINDER
This is a reminder that Thursday, Aug. 1, is the last mandatory all-hands meeting for staff to review and discuss lessons learned from the recent safety-related events at the lab. The meeting will be held in the CEBAF Center auditorium. If you have not yet attended a session, it is mandatory to attend the Aug. 1 session. If you have already attended a session, you do not need to attend the Aug. 1 session. The meeting will also be video recorded and made available to our User community at a later time.
* Physics/Theory Division: Thursday, Aug. 1, from 3 - 4 p.m.

Please be sure to be seated before the meeting begins, to limit disruptions. For more information, click here (https://www.jlab.org/directors-messages/maintaining-lab-safety-all-hands-meetings-scheduled) . For questions, contact Lauren Hansen (mailto:lhansen at jlab.org) at x7689.

LESSONS LEARNED FROM A BURN INCIDENT AT PNNL
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.youtube.com_watch-3Fv-3D-5FaGqlCIJgA4-26feature-3Dyoutu.beDan&d=DwIFaQ&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=huYtXgHboamQCcudwMT5oQ&m=CwELNDGF4peknuYTWSBXL_XM3vjNzJnpJWLgKGHVgwM&s=zytbEUHhY4JBghqTIPKG6NWhuTo_sEJDYjeDcV2qti8&e= Wharton was an apprentice at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory when he was severely injured in an arc blast while installing a 480V panel without the proper personal protective equipment. In the video below, Wharton details the incident, his recovery and how it informs his approach to working around hazardous equipment today. Wharton also shares that the major takeaway from his experience is to always have a questioning attitude when approaching a job.

WARNING: This video contains graphic content of a burn victim that may be disturbing to some.
