HALL B GROUP LEADER
It is a great pleasure to announce the appointment of Dr. Patrick Carsten Achenbach as the new Jefferson Lab Hall B Leader. Patrick is anticipated to begin his duties on August 1, 2022. Patrick's appointment follows a wide and international search where interest for the position included members from within the international CLAS12 collaboration and also beyond the Jefferson Lab user community. Patrick has a strong background in the operation of experiments and experimental equipment, having taken leadership roles at electron accelerator and spectrometer facilities. Patrick has served or is serving on the J-PARC Program Advisory Committee, as well as on various Executive & Collaboration Boards, Steering and Collaboration Management Committees.
Patrick is presently full Professor in Experimental Physics at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität in Mainz. He brings broad experience from a variety of experiments: he worked on the H1 (DESY) inclusive deep inelastic scattering experiments, in the A2 and TAPS Collaborations at MAMI to study nucleon resonances and excitations and pion/eta photoproduction, in A4 Collaborations at MAMI to carry out elastic electron scattering, parity violation and strangeness form factor experiments. Beyond particle/hadronic physics he was also involved in cosmic ray and atmospheric neutrino science. Presently, he is member of the A1 Collaboration at Mainz and PANDA collaboration at FAIR. He has many years working within the A1 Collaboration on strangeness production, hadron spectroscopy, and hypernuclei. He is also involved in the Light dark matter searches and beam dump experiment at MESA (MAMI).
I would like to take this opportunity to profoundly thank both the Search Committee, and also Stepan Stepanyan for his excellent service as the Acting Hall B Leader. Stepan will continue in his role as Deputy Hall B Leader, looking towards Patrick’s arrival to ensure a successful transition.
Regards,
Cynthia Keppel
Associate Director for Experimental Physics
