*Visiting Faculty Position in Experimental Nuclear/Particle Physics*
The Department of Physics at Old Dominion University invites
applications for a visiting professor position in physics, at the rank
of assistant professor (non-tenure track). This position is a temporary
replacement for a faculty member in experimental nuclear/particle
physics who will be on leave to the NSF. The initial appointment will be
for one year, with possible extension to a second year. We are looking
for a candidate whose research interests and experience match those of
the experimental nuclear physics group and who will be able to quickly
assume a full array of teaching responsibilities and research
supervision. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in physics and at least one
year of post-doctoral research in experimental nuclear or particle
physics. Preference will be given to candidates with a history of
funded research and/or hardware experience with complex particle physics
instrumentation, as the group is presently involved in several hardware
projects for the 12 GeV upgrade of Jefferson Lab. Preference will also
be given to candidates with substantial teaching experience, including
astronomy.
The ODU Physics Department (http://sci.odu.edu/physics/) has research
groups in experimental and theoretical nuclear physics, experimental and
theoretical atomic and few-body physics, accelerator science, condensed
matter physics, geophysics and material science. The nationally
recognized experimental nuclear/particle physics group consists of six
faculty (one will be on leave), one research professor, three postdocs
and about 10 graduate students as well as a technician. Research is
predominantly conducted at the nearby Jefferson Lab (Newport News) with
some involvement at RHIC (Brookhaven National Lab, Long Island).
Applicants should submit a letter of application addressing their
qualifications for the position, a curriculum vitae, a description of
research interests and teaching experience, and three letters of
reference to: Visiting Professor Search Committee, Department of
Physics, Old Dominion University, 4600 Elkhorn Ave., Norfolk, VA 23529
or emailed to skuhn at odu.edu <mailto:skuhn at odu.edu>. Review of
applications will begin May 15, 2012 and continue until the position is
filled.
