Experimental High Energy Nuclear Physics Tenure-Track Assistant Professor

The Department of Physics at New Mexico State University, in a partnership with the RIKEN-BNL Research Center at Brookhaven National Laboratory, seeks applicants for a Tenure-Track position at the level of Assistant Professor in Experimental High Energy Nuclear Physics (position number 2011005220).  The successful candidate will also become a RHIC Physics Fellow of the RIKEN BNL Research Center (RBRC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory for five years.  During this period, the Assistant Professor/Fellow will spend about half his/her time at NMSU and the remaining time at the RBRC in BNL.  

The NMSU experimental high energy nuclear physics group (Stephen Pate, Vassili Papavassiliou) works together with the theoretical group (Matthias Burkardt, Michael Engelhardt) in forefront areas of hadron structure physics.  The primary focus of our experimental effort at RHIC is the investigation of the spin structure of the nucleon, with a particular emphasis on the use of heavy-flavor production.  To this end we have been for a long time deeply involved in the muon detector system of the PHENIX experiment, and more recently with the development of a silicon vertex detector upgrade to that system which will begin operation in 2012.

We seek a person who will grow a vigorous, externally funded research program in strong interaction physics at RHIC and have a deep commitment to both graduate and undergraduate physics education. All candidates must have a Ph.D. degree, at least one year of post-doctoral research experience, and an established record of research and publications.
