Looking for a non-conventional career in physics, at the interface
between research and computer science? SLAC is seeking a staff member
to lead its INSPIRE effort. INSPIRE is a suite of databases for high
energy physics run as a joint effort by SLAC, CERN, DESY and Fermilab.
Its flagship literature database has 1 million records covering 40 years
of HEP research, and attracts 24 million searches per year from our
50,000 users. Other databases cover members of the community,
conferences, experiments and a job-seeking platform. In addition to
these long-standing services, we're now building new applications on
a new open-source platform, providing the HEP community with author
disambiguation and expanding the traditional concept of publication to
include, for example, scientific data. INSPIRE is part of the broader
scientific information community and we work closely with publishing
companies, scientific societies and our sister services arXiv, ADS,
HEPData and the Particle-Data-Group.

The SLAC INSPIRE Manager, in collaboration with a small and dynamic team
of physicists, computer scientists, librarians and students at CERN,
DESY, Fermilab and SLAC, will mainly be responsible for the design,
review, oversight and implementation of present and future technical
solutions across the entire spectrum of INSPIRE R&D and operations.
The successful candidate will directly supervise a team of 6 technical
staff at SLAC (both Software Developers and Librarians) and liaise with
young developers at the partner laboratories.

A recent PhD in theoretical or experimental high-energy physics or a
closely related field is preferred; some post-doctoral research with
experience supervising students is an advantage. We're looking for
people with leadership potential, interest in web technology, and a
desire to continue a tradition of innovation in scholarly communication
in the field. You will help develop technologies that will improve the
way people search for, discover and publish scientific information,
and a continuous interaction with the HEP community and understanding
of its needs is crucial.
