Postdoctoral researcher position at the University of Edinburgh
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is an opening for a 2 year (in the first instance) appointment as
a postdoctoral researcher with the nuclear physics group of the
University of Edinburgh. The successful candidate will be based in
Edinburgh and carry out experiments at the Jefferson Lab facility in
the USA (http://www.jlab.org) and the MAMI microtron facility in Mainz,
Germany (http://www.kph.uni-mainz.de). The candidate will play a key
role in realizing the science from our experiments at these facilities,
which exploit electromagnetic beams to improve our understanding of
strongly interacting matter.
Our research covers topics in both nuclear and hadron physics. Recent
research includes accurate determination of neutron skins and
measurements to establish the excitation spectrum of the nucleon.
Further details of our research are available on the group webpages
(http://www.ph.ed.ac.uk/research/nuclear-physics). We are looking to
appoint a dynamic physicist and there will be good opportunities to
develop further new proposals at these facilities.
The Edinburgh group are spokespersons on future experiments exploiting
the forward tagger at CLAS12 at the upgraded Jefferson Lab. You would be
expected to contribute significantly to this future program including
to the design and construction of new equipment.
Previous postdoctoral experience in nuclear or hadron physics is
desirable although exceptional researchers at an earlier stage will be
considered.
The closing date for applications is 7th August 2012. The post can start
as early as 1st Sept 2012 but will remain open until a suitably
qualified candidate is found. The salary range for the post is £30,122
to £35,938 dependent on experience.
The Edinburgh nuclear group is diverse and includes research in nuclear
astrophysics, direct dark matter searches and the application of laser
plasma accelerated beams. The University of Edinburgh was ranked in the
top
20 of world universities for the recent QS survey in 2011. The
University is a member of the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance
(http://www.supa.ac.uk).
