The Department of Physics at the University of Virginia invites
applications from qualified candidates for a research scientist position
in the area of experimental nuclear and particle physics working with
the solid polarized target group. The position will be supported by a
Department of Energy research contract and the appointment is subject to
the availability of funds. The activity that the candidate will
undertake may require that they spend a considerable amount of time at
Jefferson Lab in Newport News, VA. This is a one year appointment;
however appointments may be renewed for additional one- or two-year
extensions, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
The qualified candidate will have:
- A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in experimental nuclear or particle
physics and at least 2 years in a postdoctoral position at the time of
application.
- Demonstrated experience with the principles and operation of solid
polarized targets, both in the lab and in spin structure measurements.
- A background and an understanding of techniques to enhance the tensor
polarization of deuteron targets.
- Experience with the preparation of experimental proposals to a
national lab Program Advisory Committee.
- Experience supervising students at both the undergraduate and graduate
levels.
- Experience leading and managing research projects independently.
In addition, the qualified candidate must possess strong interpersonal
skills and be able to develop new experiments and support the
interpretation and publishing of results from existing experiments.
