Research Assistant Professor in Experimental Nuclear/Particle Physics (F0566A1, Limited Appointment)

The Department of Physics at Old Dominion University (ODU) is seeking a non-tenure track faculty member with research expertise and interests in experimental Nuclear and Particle Physics. The successful applicant is expected to support the ongoing research of the experimental Nuclear/Particle Physics group at the nearby Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. In particular, the incumbent is expected to contribute to the data taking and analysis with the CLAS12 spectrometer in Hall B where the ODU group is leading several experiments. For this reason, extensive, multi-year experience beyond the Ph.D. with the CLAS12 hardware and software environment and in particular the JAVA-based data analysis packages is expected. Candidates who have had a leadership role on recently completed experiments with CLAS12 are particularly encouraged to apply.

  * Demonstrated ability to conceive, develop and run nuclear/particle physics experiments at electron accelerator facilities and analyze their results with minimal supervision.
  * A PhD in physics with extensive post-doctoral expertise in the execution and analysis of nuclear/particle physics experiments with electron beams is required.

The appointment will be limited to a maximum of two years and will be made at the Research Assistant Professor level with an anticipated start date of Fall 2022. Funding for the salary will come from ongoing grants of the ODU group; hence, continuation is contingent on availability of funds.

All faculty at ODU are expected to promote inclusivity and contribute to efforts geared toward increasing participation among members of under-represented groups in science.

Old Dominion University is a dynamic metropolitan, residential, research-intensive public institution with both a diverse faculty and student body. ODU has an enrollment of 24,000+ students, including approximately 6,000 graduate students, and a full-time equivalent faculty of over 900 of which 40% are women (https://www.odu.edu/about/facts-and-figures). The University’s primary campus is in Norfolk, VA, one of seven cities that make up the historic Hampton Roads region of Virginia.

A complete application will be submitted online at https://jobs.odu.edu/postings/16628, and consist of a cover letter describing the individual’s qualifications for the position, a curriculum vitae, unofficial graduate transcripts, and the names and contact information for three professional references. The application tracking system will solicit and receive reference letters from the individuals listed upon submitting your application. Applications received by July 31, 2022 will receive full consideration.

It is the policy of Old Dominion University to provide equal employment, educational and social opportunities for all persons, without regard to race (or traits historically associated with race including hair texture, hair type, and protective hairstyles such as braids, locks, and twists), color, religion, sex or gender (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), national origin, gender identity or expression, age, veteran status, disability, political affiliation, sexual orientation or genetic information.
