[Dcouncil] Hiring

Hello Denny,

Thank you for the email and for highlighting the need to promote equal access and opportunities for all.

For you and the Council's awareness, the physical and mental requirements auto-populate for each job posting based on the actual job classification. These were established in coordination by Compensation and Divisions. However, they aren't universal. So, during the approval process the Recruiter reviews and edits those specific to the position with input from the Hiring Supervisor.

If a physical or mental requirement is not truly necessary for the job (and one we can defend removing) then it should not be in the posting. These qualifications are intended only for essential functions of the job. For example, if you 'may' need to climb a ladder once a year to do your job then that is not likely to be defended as 'essential'.

Also, posting the physical /mental requirements does not mean a candidate is excluded if they cannot meet that requirement. It means the employer may need to provide a reasonable accommodation provided it does not create an undue hardship. This is posted on all job applications and our website when applying for a job.

Please let me know if this helps and how we can work with you/others.

Rhonda

Subject: [Dcouncil] Hiring

Good afternoon,

I am writing to address an issue that came to my attention yesterday and falls within the realm of the D&I council. As our roll is to address weaknesses in the areas of diversity and inclusion it is apparent that we are very weak in the area of including those with physical disabilities when it comes to hiring. Hall B has posted an opening for a physicist position and those posting the opening had some concerns about losing out on good candidates because of the labs hiring requirements.
Our current application standards limits the pool of candidates because it requires applicants to posses physical abilities that are not always necessary to the position for which they are applying.
I feel that we as a council should review the hiring standards and suggest that these restrictions be removed unless the position requires them.

Thank you,
Denny Insley
