Rebecca,

Thanks for being so open about your divorce and your great grandmother's situation. From your story, It sounds like your great grandmother was a wise young woman. It seems that she realized there was a pain to stay the same ( being treated badly and taking care of intoxicated men every day). But she also realized there would be a pain to change (escape to a new unknown country alone).

Your great grandmother bestowed upon you this; Like your great grandmother, you both realized that the pain of staying the same (for you your divorce for her being treated badly) was greater than the pain of change (for you a name change for her a country change).

As the saying goes "when the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of change". Change will come.

By the way, Anderson is a surname deriving from a patronymic meaning "Son of Ander/Andrew" (itself derived from the Greek name "Andreas", meaning "man" or "manly"). ... . May be this accounts for the 13 males.

Enjoy the use and sound of hearing your new name. Rebecca Anderson, when pronounced together has a smooth sounding tone.

Once again thanks for sharing your story with your fellow council members.

Ernest Stallworth

Subject: [Dcouncil] New last name

Good morning all,

I hope everyone is having a great week.

You may have noticed a new last name in my emails to our group. As a result of a very lengthy divorce process from my ex-wife, I am dropping my former married name “Duckett” and taking my middle name “Anderson.” My email will stay the same: duckett at jlab.org<mailto:duckett at jlab.org>.

The name Anderson honors my great grandmother who was the last of 13 siblings; all of them male. Her mother passed when she was young and she was expected to take care of them all, including her father. They treated her terribly and drank heavily every night. After they would pass out, she would steal just a little bit of money from their pockets in the evenings. Eventually, she had enough to purchase a ticket to America from Scotland where, at just 17, she boarded a ship by herself to try and make a new life here. I think about her bravery often.

Thanks and talk soon,

Rebecca
