Hi Beni,

We discussed the subject of spectators in our weekly status meeting today. I will clarify in the language in the safety documents that spectators (without all the training) should only be escorted in the room when the laser output has been disabled.

This will be great a great opportunity for upper management/DOE visitors to see what type of work is being done for EIC development at Jlab.

Additionally, we should put a camera so alignment procedures can be observed from outside the room.

Marc

Regarding the "Visitor, Spectator" section, what is the purpose of such?
I guess Greg can answer that. Depending on the answer the laser may not be needed to operate
in that scenario.??

cheers,
Beni

Hi Marc,

I've looked over both documents and have some comments and questions:

General
- In both documents, the laser manufacturer is named as "Kimmon". On the laser documentation, the manufacturer is listed as "Kimmon Koha". It may not be important, but I thought I'd mention it.

Laser System Specific Lesson plan document:
- Page 1: under "4.0 Target Audience", the room number is incorrect in the text box that says "Workers need to work in the EEL 102A laser room"

- Page 1: under "7.0 Aids/Handouts" for the text box #2, the contents look incomplete or cutoff. All I can see in that box is "Brief Description: laser system for"

- Page 2: under Objective A, SoB A.3, the eye protection is noted as 7+ OD. Should this be changed to 2+ to match the LOSP?

- Page 6: under SoB D.1, the low-power filter will reduce the laser power by a factor of 100 (document currently says 10).

Laser Operational Safety Procedure:
- Page 4: What is the "Laser Process" for the potential hazard "Temporary or permanent eye damage"? If it's "Operations", that process has another "Temporary or permanent eye damage" hazard row on page 2; could the two rows be combined?

- Page 8: It says "The laser housing is mounted on a stage." From the diagram and from what we've talked about, I thought the laser housing is on a fixed height stand. In the diagram also on page 8, it looks like the laser housing is sitting on extruded aluminum.

- Page 9: under "Hazards" there is "(2+)" after any time it says "laser eye protection". Making it say "(OD 2+)" might make it clearer that the glasses need to be rated correctly and avoid the chance of any misunderstandings as to what 2+ means

Subject: [dsg-eic_dirc] DIRC laser safety document

Hi Beni and Greg,

Attached is the latest update to the LOSP/THA document. I have made some changes to the procedure section and included the Maximum Permissible Exposure information provided by Jen Williams. The procedure section changes included the same details which are in the Laser specific lesson plan and additional text on the "sweep" sub-procedure.

If everyone can review this by Tuesday, and send comments. I can make those changes and submit this for SME reviews. This will put the document on track for approval just after the return from the holiday break.

Regards,
Marc
