Hi Jen,
Thank you for your reply.
We'll stick with a matte, anodized, aluminum material, then.

Hi Tyler,
The product in the link you shared is a good material for the laser. Anodized aluminum is typically a solid choice to block laser light.
A potential problem with using plastic is that the surface is smooth, which could cause speculator reflections.
Another issue with plastic is that if not purchasing a material from a laser safety vendor (specifying the laser wavelength and OD needs), we would need to verify that the material will attenuate the laser light. In the past when this has come up, I've asked Laser Supervisors to test the material in their laser lab to verify attenuation. This may not be an option since the DIRC laser is not setup yet.
Jen

Subject: [dsg-eic_dirc] Questions on EIC DIRC optical table sidewalls
Hello everyone,
With the laser controlled area construction well underway, we're starting to look at the finer details of what is needed for the laser controlled area, specifically, the side walls for the optical table.
With that, I have some sets of questions on the optical table sidewalls and test set up:
1. Sidewall material:
Does the material have to be explicitly specified for laser applications?
Example: https://www.thorlabs.com/thorproduct.cfm?partnumber=TPS6
Would any similar material that we could customize for our table be okay?
Does the material have to be metal?
Could we use a thick plastic sheeting?
2. Stand for laser on optical table:
The photos of previous set ups have the laser on an extruded aluminum stand, rather than resting on the table. Will we use a similar stand?
How tall would the stand be?
Do we need to procure the stand materials?
Thanks,
Tyler
