[Dsg-rich] RICH spherical mirrors 3 and 4 recieved from ECI

Hello,

I agree with Sandro. It does not seem that the mirrors were packaged well. Also, looking at the box the mirror came in, there is no indicator that the contents are fragile.

For the remaining eight mirrors, they should be packaged in stronger boxes and clearly labeled as fragile. Also, it would be good if ECI could remove the plastic threaded rods from the back of the mirrors to prevent others from breaking off or puncturing the box.

In the mean time, we will wait for further direction regarding mirrors 3 and 4 on whether to try to repair the broken threaded rod.

Best regards,
Tyler

Hi,
In my opinion the mirror shipping from ECI to jlab was a disaster! We currently have two threaded rods broken, I have few spares in house but i need to check if the length is good or not.
Please check if the bonded part of the mount is damaged.

Regards
S.

perhaps, the delicate mirrors should be shipped in reinforced cardboard boxes.

Hello Marco Mirazita and ,

We received RICH spherical mirrors 3 and 4 today from ECI. As last time the mirrors were received we opened and inspected them in EEL 121 DSG small clean room. Attached are pictures from the inspection. Because of the large attachment size, I have also posted the pictures to my userweb page at the link below in case the attachment cannot send:

https://userweb.jlab.org/~tlemon/RICH_spherical_mirrors_3_and_4_recieved_from_ECI_2017-06-16/

Our findings from the inspection are:

Shipping box and packaging:
1.) The exterior shipping box looked as if it was crushed during shipping however, all interior boxes were in better condition.
2.) Each mirror was packaged separately in its own box and that box was wrapped in bubble wrap.
3.) Within each individual box, the mirrors were sealed in the same silver bag as we received them in from CMA in 2016.
4.) Mirror 4 had additional cushioning and padding in its individual box.
5.) Mirror 3 had no additional padding it its individual box.

Mirror 3:
1.) One of the screws used to mount the mirror to its support structure was poking through its sealed silver bag.
2.) One corner of the mirror was not resting on a foam pad.
3.) One of the screws used to mount the mirror to its support frame had snapped off where it was screwed into the mount during shipping.
4.) There appeared to be scratches and scuffs on the reflective surface of the mirror.

Mirror 4:
1.) Two of the screws used to mount the mirror to its support structure was poking through its sealed silver bag.
2.) One of the screws used to mount the mirror to its support frame had snapped off where it was screwed into the mount during shipping.
3.) There appeared to be scratches and scuffs on the reflective surface of the mirror.
4.) There was one small pocket (~2 mm in size) on the reflective surface of the mirror.

Regarding the scuffs, they may be leftover residue from the coating process. We did not attempt to clean the reflective surfaces to avoid damaging the surface.

Regarding the two broken screws, it looks that we might be able to remove the broken portion of the screw and use a new threaded rod. Would CMA be able to send us at least two more of the plastic threaded screws?

Marco Contalbrigo,
Since you are at JLab for the collaboration meeting, if you would like to inspect the mirrors also, the mirrors are stored in the DSG small clean room.

Best regards,
Tyler
