Hi Marc,
can I have a look at the wire you have in hand?
The foam will be used as spacer between the aerogel tiles, to reduce the
mechanical stress and to kill the photons that could go from one tile to
another.
It should be very thin and not sticky. Sandro suggested something like

I'm not sure if this is sticky or not, anyway we would need something
more than 1" wide because the thicker tiles are 3 cm.
