[dsg-hallb_rich] RICH aerogel storage drybox malfunction and aerogel tile relocation

Hi Valery,
Back in December 2019 when preparing for the arrival of more aerogel, we noticed that the large dry cabinet in EEL 124 was not working. All tiles at that point were moved to the three small dry boxes in EEL 121b clean room gowning area.
We tried getting ahold of the big dry box’s manufacturer on two separate occasions since and have not had any response.

Tyler,
What happened with the large dry box in EEL124?
Valery

Subject: [dsg-hallb_rich] RICH aerogel storage drybox malfunction and aerogel tile relocation
Hello,
Over the past week or so, George noticed that one of the small dryboxes used to store aerogel for RICH (center drybox in attached photo) was consistently reading higher than normal humidity. We tried power cycling the drybox to no avail, it's internal humidity remained high.
At this point Brian went in to JLab and relocated the tiles in the malfunctioning box to the other two, working dry boxes.
At this point, the two working small dry boxes are very full, to the point where their performance may start to suffer due to lack of air circulation.
With this latest dry box failure and the previous failure of the large dry box in EEL124, we (DSG) strongly suggest looking into at least one new dry box that will be able to comfortably fit all aerogel tiles needed for future RICH sectors.
In the mean time, we will look further into whether either malfunctioning drybox can be repaired. We will also look online for new dry boxes or other alternates.
-Tyler

Swapped the tiles from the middle "bad" box to the left "good" box.
Got all of the tiles except 4 of them into the right box as well (the cardboard boxes on top of the right boxes are the tiles that were moved into the right-most box, see attached picture.
Both of the end boxes are really way over capacity and we need to see if we can get the bigger dry box in EEL/124 operational.

I'll go in late tonight or tomorrow night if George finds the middle box still isn't working to see if I can Tetris the middle boxes' tiles into the other two.

If the drybox humidity is still high, then the box has probably stopped working.
The only thing I can think of in that situation is to rearrange all the tiles to try to fit them in the other two dryboxes.
If there isn't enough room (which is more than likely the case), a nitrogen purge or some sort of backup drying environment for the tiles would need to be set up.
I'm not able to go in to the lab currently, I had a tonsillectomy last week and am still getting through that. So if something needs to be done in person, either you or Brian would have to do it. I can obviously help as much as possible remotely, still.

I power cycled the middle drybox Friday. The RH was ~36% when I left. I will check it today in ~ 2 hours when I go in.
Anything you suggest that I do if the RH is high still?

Hi George,
Thanks for the information about the dry box.
I also got a few emails last night that I just saw from it’s monitoring cRIO stating that the humidity inside the box is higher.
Next time you (or anyone else) goes in to the lab, could you please try power cycling the dry box? You’ll probably have to unplug it from power to get it to fully power down.
If the humidity is still high after that, we might need to look into that backup drying system with a N2 bottle again.
Thanks,
Tyler

Hi Tyler,
I noticed the middle dry box was reading 26.x %RH the past 2 days. I know this one reads higher than the others, but I don't recall seeing double digits before.
