[dsg-hallb_rich] Fw: Drilling in carbon fiber?

Hi,

I forgot to cc the RICH mailing list in the email below asking about steps needed for drilling carbon fiber.

Despite the screws individually being able to pass through the holes in the panel, it is tricky to insert six at a time like is needed for the PCBs. Making the holes slightly bigger will help this.

Any response I get I will forward.

Subject: Drilling in carbon fiber?

Hi Jennifer,

I'm not sure if you're the right contact for this, so could you please let me know if I should contact someone else?

We have a carbon-fiber panel with small holes that need to be made slightly bigger. The panel does have a coating on it over the carbon-fiber, so most likely any material that will be removed is from that coating.

Last time (around five years ago) we contacted ESH to make sure we were able to do this safely and the response was that as long as we wore eye protection and gloves and used a vacuum immediately next to the drill, we were fine to modify the panel as needed.

Is this strategy still okay to follow?

Thanks for any information you are able to give.
