I'm not surprised, the software is as-delivered from 4--5 years ago.

It really looks like the EPICS backend (at least) is pretty buggy.  That
is something that we could definitely press CAEN on.

The fact that I can query the SwRelease PV on the crate in the ESB
and get a value from an unrelated PV returned there is, at minimum, some
memory management / indexing problem in the CAEN software.  That could
also explain the weird symptoms you folks have seen.
