[Dsg-hallc_nps] NPS temperature reading jumps

Hi Julie and Carlos,

If rebooting the mainframe is the solution we would like to move forward with, I can try writing some code to do so every 2 or 3 days. However, when we reboot the mainframe we also have to restart the LabVIEW program, so I'll need to figure out if there is a way to do this automatically. I'll discuss it with my team and get back to you.

Best,
Aaron

Hi Julie, all,

my assumption (initially suggested by D. Mack) is that this is due to radiation causing some bit flips in the ADC readout. It seems that rebooting the mainframe resets things, so it would be good to do it after this happens to confirm. Also, to prevent this from happening in the future, it may be a good practice to reboot the mainframe periodically (every 2-3 days?).

Best,
Carlos

Hi Aaron

Tonight, I’m staring at the temperature readings for the NPS calorimeter. There are the unphysical jumps that Carlos mentioned to me (and possibly to you) a few days ago. Like in this entry: https://logbooks.jlab.org/entry/4223498

What is that due to? Could it be that your readings are slipping? By this, I mean, it seems that when there is a sudden jump, color lines get switched. For example, in the picture below at 2023-11-20 at 9 am, it looks to me that the pink becomes light green, the light green becomes dark green, and the dark green becomes blue.
