Hello EIC team,
As most of you are aware, I have taken over from Allison as PM for the EICPP here at JLab. Since many of you may not know me, I will start with a short job history. At some point I will give a seminar on some of the work I have done over the years. Below is a slide I made for a SNOWMASS presentation that captures my career trajectory – with a bit of an unusual context, but it captures a bunch of what I have done in pictures.
* BA in Physics and Math – Colby College
* Ph.D. in Particle Physics – UC Irvine (E760 at FNAL, charmonium spectroscopy experiment)
* Postdoc then Research Scientist at Purdue working on CLEO II.V and CLEO III (turned my focus to rare B physics and silicon trackers)
* FNAL – Engineering Physicist at SiDet managing the engineering group during the era of building silicon for CDF, D0 CMS, developing BTeV, and the Dark Energy Camera. Continued B-physics studies on D0 (overlapped with Mont there)
* Studied project management under Ed Temple as we worked on Run IIB and BTeV projects
* After Run IIb and BTeV were cancelled I made a big career shift and went to PNNL to do National Security work
* Many interesting and diverse efforts, but among them initiating NP/HEP programs at PNNL
* And 15 years later Stuart approached me to run MOLLER and now I am here at JLab since 2020
So now some organizational things.
* I am still wearing the MOLLER PM hat until my replacement arrives in mid-July. I am working to shed a few other small commitments I have.
* Attached is a new EICPP org chart. This aligns the JLab organization more closely with the overall EIC organization. I am still working through some aspects, but for the most part this is how I envision the project structure looking here.
* You will note that there has been significant reorganization in the “L1” box
* I am appointing Katherine as interim Deputy PM effective immediately. Katherine will be paying attention to engineering more so than I and I will be paying more attention to the physics issues (accelerator, science, detector).
* Sergei is taking over the Accelerator Chief Scientist role while Andrei will continue to be engaged and lead the international partnerships effort on the accelerator side.
* As people are aware, Tim will be transitioning out to fulfill his new duties as a division head – a search is under way for his replacement in the EIC organization.
Finally some management style comments:
* Health and safety is a priority. This includes maintaining some semblance of work-life balance. I am all for succession planning and adding staff as needed. If there is a concern come talk to me.
* I value communication and transparency up and down the chain. Surprises are never good. I will do my best to openly communicate and pass along information to the team and expect the folks under me to pass information down the ranks appropriately and to elevate things up to me.
* I have an open door policy for all staff. If anyone ever has a question, concern or just wants to share a coffee, come by C110….caveat is I have endless meetings so you might need to schedule time!
I am looking forward to helping us all be successful and to move this project forward. Over the coming months I hope to meet more of you and get a better understanding of all the moving parts – there are many.
Kind Regards,
Jim
