Dear all,
I would like to call for a special eRD108 meeting on Friday August 11th at 9 am to specifically discuss MPGD readout electronics and integration considerations (cabling / services matter) with our ePIC DAQ WG colleagues.
This meeting would replace our usual Thursday meeting (on August 10th) but at the same 9 am.

Hi Irakli,
Thanks for the feedback.
So if I schedule the meeting on Friday August 11th (say afternoon after 2 pm), will it work for everyone?
I am not available before that and it seems to me like September is a little bit late
Main stakeholder, please reply on the August 11th 2pm suggestion
Best regards
Kondo

Hello,
Indeed, me too, I have indicated that we have to check radiation levels in all MPGD locations.
Because we can have important differences for different locations.
While our ASIC developments will cover the difference, commercial space grade components might not be suitable everywhere.
So, yes, we need to have a table that for each location lists TID, neutron fluence, 20 MeV proton flux figures.
Also, it will be good to know what are the heavy ions we can get and at what energies to understand potential latch-up problems (probably none, but anyway).
I think that magnetic field, whether 1T or 2T, will require same precautions.

Hi Fernando,
Thanks for the quick reply. Tentative dates could be August 17th or 24th whichever work for all.
If we (Saclay folks) can agree on one of this option, I will already reserve that day.
Best regards
Kondo

Hi Irakli,
Thanks for sending the material. Lots of very useful information. I am thinking that we should at some point go through the same process for the other ePIC MPGD layers (Outer uRWELL Barrel layer + both HE and EE uRWELL discs).
I am thinking that we can organize a eRD108 meeting where the MPGD electronics will be discussed as a whole (not only in Cyl MM context).
Do you think that we can schedule such meeting in the second half of August? Will that work for you?
Best regards
Kondo

Hello,
I've put few old and new slides together thinking they are relevant for the discussions.
Especially, I've looked at radiation and magnetic field levels for the cylindrical Micromegas tracker.
And on their impact on the choice of some of the FEB components.
Also, I think ROD locations have an important consequences on the ROD / FEB design (if RODs are in magnetic field, or if RODs and FEBs are far from each other).
Low voltage distribution is also an important question.
We certainly have some home work to do before going to the integration group with questions.
But we also need information in order to advance in the detector - readout definition.
Regards,
Irakli

Hello,
I am a bit busy these days (partially with salsa by the way).
Could not participate to the DAQ WG meeting.
Kondo, in attachment there is a file that describes, among other things, communication between FEB and RDO.
Gives at least an idea about signals we will need.
The number of FE ASICs per FEB is not fixed and should be adapted according to various constraints, like detector shape, keep in zones, cooling, cable tray capacity, etc.
For the FEB power estimates, yes, 1W per chip is a good approximation.
If you'll organize a meeting next week, let me know and I will join remotely.
Hope this helps,
Regards,
Irakli

Hello Kondo,
As you know, the SALSA ASIC is under development so we don't have a final spec sheet but we have some general guidelines that you can use. In the nomenclature of ePIC:
a) Adapter: likely part of the detector and similar to the GEM-TRT with high-density signal connectors and connections for the detector HV bias. If so, you have to consider the HV resistive divider, its location and the HV feed cables.
b) FEB: attaches to the high-density connectors on the Adapter and has the SALSA ASICs. Each ASIC has 64 channels and you can consider needing two supply feeds (perhaps 2.5 V and 1.2 V); nominally 1 W per ASIC; a copper serial link per ASIC and a copper link for control/configuration/clock. The number of ASICs per FEB will depend on the detector geometry and so do the number of copper connections/links.
c) RDO: receives the copper links from the FEB(s) and for aggregation of multiples. The RDO has a core dimension of 2.5x2.5 inches and nominally 4x4 inches with the multiple connectors; 2-3 W for the FPGA with 2 supply feeds; 1 fiber out. It would be advantageous to have the RDOs close to the FEB (<5 m) if space permits, otherwise they will have to be located outside of the detector envelope (where is not clear) or on the platform (~15 m away) and will necessitate repeaters for the copper links.
Each of these will likely be implemented differently for each detector but following a similar architecture.
Best regards,
Fernando

Dear all,
I was wondering if one of you could point me to a document where I could find a bit more info on the SALSA readout for the ePIC MPDG layers. I am working on the info to fill the services and cable spreadsheet requested by the project managers (Elke) I found this presentation but I was looking for something specific with the power of the electronics (FEB) and cooling needs etc . https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__indico.bnl.gov_event_19655_contributions_77881_attachments_48153_81753_230622-5FWG.pdf&d=DwIFAw&c=CJqEzB1piLOyyvZjb8YUQw&r=8RkWGK8Ehr23aQ4XZaeJkKhdeUjRK7rjlS9Ivaen0wM&m=opffIbyyxVlxC_5LNs9UfO0_OicnebYjDQmzG3xhkpXUIaLQc93Ximi-agt8b-rK&s=WtveqLHaJQ8c76as2JkQK1lGCxWIfWzBnB-d5Au13Sw&e=
Also I was wondering if having 8 ASICs er FEB (510 channels) is something already fixed or will be customized for different detectors. The design of the strip readout layers of the detectors will be affected by this
Any document with information will be helpful
Best regards
Kondo

Subject: ePIC MPGD readout - meeting
Dear all,
We had a meeting with the project leaders (Elke, Rolf. .) and the CAM (Brian Eng) yesterday to discuss a number of issues regarding the ePIC Trackers in preparation for the upcoming technical review, notably regarding filling a couple of google spreadsheets from Elke. It looks like the MPGD trackers are way way behind schedule and notably regarding collecting specific information on the MPGD readout (FEE, rdo .) from readout & DAQ electronics WG colleagues (Fernando, Jeff .)
I was wondering if we could schedule a meeting sometime next week to discuss specifics for the MPGD trackers and collect the info from electronic WG experts
I know that there are already some work done for the cylindrical MPGD by Francesco and Maxence, but we would have to merge all these input into a coherent message for Elke spreadsheets.
Please let me know already your availability for next week. I will circulate a doodle poll later this evening ti chose a date
