Alex,
These expectations are flexible and can be changed at any time (as you have reiterated to me several times), but the milestones agreed upon on the LDRD are not, and are answerable both to higher management and the US DOE. This *CANNOT* continue until the end of the fiscal year.
I agree that the splitters are a crucial element, but Donish is expected to spend his time on the LDRD work, as described in the LDRD milestones. Removing him from this work will impact both the budget of the LDRD, and the completion of the milestones, and cannot continue. It also mixes money/funding.
I must insist that Donish be allowed to finish the LDRD work, as there is a lot of it, and he is tasked with completing it. Others in the group can work on the splitter design, as well as extraction, and other aspects which are incomplete. As was discussed before Donish was hired, this fiscal year he is fully funded by the LDRD. Please, do not continue to ask him to spend time on other tasks until the end of this fiscal year.
Thank you,
Ryan

Hi Ryan,
To clarify, per Donish’s FY 23 expectations he is spending 60% on the LDRD simulations and tools development. Donish is also tasked at 20% level with another expectation:
‘Participate in the FFA at CEBAF WG weekly meeting. Actively support FFA at CEBAF design studies to identify potential solutions and to assure their effectiveness.”
Within this task Donish is working with Dejan and me to explore possible optics solutions for the Splitters. This activity is perfectly aligned with his expectations and WILL continue. Splitters design is currently the most critical element of our scheme and ALL hands on deck are expected. Everybody is welcomed to explore new ideas and solutions.
Cheers,
Alex

Dear Colleagues,
I see that Donish is listed on the schedule as working on design work, and looking at the previous minutes from last week (when I was on travel), it appears he was also tasked with other design work on the electromagnetic arcs.
Donish is currently funded by our LDRD, and given the rules tied to such funding at the lab, he must be working on the agreed upon milestones and deliverables which are on record with LDRD management and the US DOE. Design work is *not* in the scope of our LDRD, and this point has been reiterated in quarterly update meetings with the LDRD managers. He is moving along very nicely with the LDRD work, but there is a lot left to finish before the end of the fiscal year – easily a full time job. We cannot afford to spare him for outside tasks right now, since the timeline is aggressive but achievable.
This was also agreed upon prior Donish’s arrival. Please see the screenshot of the email from Todd below (from October 5th):

I must insist that we do not “mix colors of money and tasks” until the LDRD is complete at the end of this fiscal year. Any time spent on other tasks is mixing funding, or taking him away from the designated tasks agreed upon in the LDRD, thus impacting both the timetable of the deliverables AND the budget of the LDRD.
If you have questions on the deliverables, and what constitutes the work scope of the LDRD, please feel free to ask me.
Sincerely,
Ryan
