Minutes of Hall A Group Meeting September 11, 2012
1) Thia Keppel
a) News from this morning?s senior staff meeting
i) NSAC subcommittee meeting:
(1) Subcommittee to make a report to NSAC, then NSAC
reports to DOE
(2) Basic question is what to do in the bad budget
situation?
(3) JLab did well (by comparison)
ii) Rolf and Bob M. talked to Helmut re SBS
(1) Expect quarterly written reports
(2) Expect monthly phone reports
(3) Starting in October
iii) 6-month continuing resolution is to be presented to the
house. Contains flexibility for the Office of Science.
iv) Foreign MOU?s are being scrutinized and thus stacking
up. This will cause delays particularly for foreign
travel.
v) Conference approvals are still an issue
(1) LINAC and SPIN have been approved
(2) DNP is still waiting
vi) Henceforward, there will be a logbook at the front
desk. All visitors must sign-in. Expect to go electronic
sometime in the future.
vii) Software review document is going around.
(1) Ole reports on general contents
(a) Generally they were impressed with what we?re
doing
(b) Wanted more user feedback
(c) Suggested more use of code validation tools
(d) Suggested we pay more attention to file management
and data cataloguing
(e) Hall A specific:
(i) Parallelize the analyzer
(ii) Want more specific requirements and testing
of the SBS tracking software,
(2) Final report should be out in a few weeks
viii) Accelerator wants to have a meeting with Hall
leaders re multi-hall operations approach. Should give
more flexibility
ix) Science Council meeting was positive
b) The next Hall A Collaboration meeting will be the week of
December 10th. Exactly which days TBD.
c) We?re starting to prepare the Annual Report. Expect to be
contacted
d) Received a complaint that the Hall A webpage needs updating.
Patrizia adds it would be nice to have a list of all
published results from Hall A.
e) SOLID meeting this week
f) Polarized 3He target meeting next week
2) Robin Wines
a) Møller:
i) 4th quad going in the box today, to be shipped tomorrow.
Hopefully here by Friday.
(1) Question: Install right away and then take out for
measuring later in order to meet the 12 GeV deadline,
or measure 1st then install? Post meeting answer from
Claus Rode, do it right, measure 1st then install.
b) Compton: all parts are here except for the pole piece
extensions.
c) DVCS/GMp:
i) Waiting for cost estimate from the machine shop for the
flange extension piece
ii) Whit is checking the drawings for the support structure
d) SBS/BigBite detector: working on support frames
e) Generally supporting A1n, SBS, and SOLID
f) All are now using the new CAD software
3) Ed Folts
a) Møller detector box installed, expect final alignment by
Friday (9/14)
b) Working on cryo upgrades
c) Finishing up on Møller
d) Flood cleanup
e) Working on schedules
4) Doug Higinbotham
a) Counting House is ready for refurbishment
b) Still don?t know the exact dates of the extent of the work
to be done.
5) Ole Hansen
a) We have our own database server, called halladb. Let Ole
(ole at jlab.org) know if you want to use it.
b) There?s a new farm environment for analysis use. Connect to
ifarm
