Minutes of Hall A Group Meeting September 18, 2012
1) Thia Keppel
a) News from this morning?s senior staff meeting
i) A Diversity and Inclusion Council has been established at
the lab. It?s just starting out.
ii) Thanks from Mont for cooperating with the recent
locking of doors to CEBAF Center
iii) The new laser lab design should be done by October.
Work should start by the end of October and should take
about one month.
iv) For the next year we have all the space we?re going to
get. Re the high bay area, tell Walt a.s.a.p. if you
haven?t already of any plans there.
v) Hall B Large Angle Calorimeter, do we want it? To be
discussed offline
vi) PAC report should be out in about a week
vii) A training talk for GIT (see Ole?s report below) is
scheduled for October 9th
viii) IT steering committee meeting next Tuesday (9/25)
ix) Still having trouble inviting International
collaborators to the Lab without MOU?s in place.
2) Robin Wines
a) Møller: 4th Quad is here!
b) DVCS/GMp:
i) Entrance window
ii) Support structure
iii) Have a quote from the machine shop for the extension
flange piece. Want to consider other options.
iv) Revising pipe extension piece
c) SBS: working on the BigBite detectors
d) Doing cost estimates for A1n and SOLID
e) Getting ready for upcoming collaboration meetings
3) Ed Folts
a) Checking the 4th quad
b) Working on cryogenics
c) Working on fixture for the Compton magnet move
d) Picked up parts for the Compton laser hut wall modifications
this morning
4) Sirish Nanda
a) Compton 12 GeV upgrade going well
i) Working in the laser hut area
ii) Moved electronics from upstairs into the Hall, cabling
and checking out.
5) Doug Higinbotham
a) Has gathered digital object identification for Hall A
publications. (nice script available)
i) Working with Kim Kindrew to clean things up
b) BigBite frame looks OK.
6) Alexandre Camsonne continues doing fastbus work
7) Jixie Zhang is working on g2p simulations event reconstruction
8) Kalyan Allada
a) Working on inclusive Hadron analysis
b) Have visiting student from USTC helping
9) Jian-Ping Chen
a) SOLID meeting:
i) Friday and Saturday (9/14-15)
ii) Got the charge for the director?s review
iii) Went through:
(1) a dry run for the magnet
(2) Detectors
(3) DAQ
iv) Discussed organization structure
v) Prioritized tasks
vi) Future plans:
(1) Dry run
(2) Collaboration meeting
(3) Director?s review
b) Polarized 3He target meeting got input from Robin and Al re
mechanical parts
c) Cryotarget:
i) GMp/DVCS will use a standard target
ii) Planning modifications to make Hall A and C targets the
same (operational no difference from now)
10) Bogdan Wojtsekhowski
a) BigBite design of detector package going ahead
i) Describes details
(1) GEM plane
(2) Cherenkov plane
(3) GEM plane
(4) Etc.
ii) Give status of various parts
iii) Konrad Aniol's contribution to the BigBite detector
upgrade is approximately $50k.
b) GEM?s at UVa:
i) 1st full sized module constructed
ii) It failed
iii) We learned a lot and now have a simpler and more
reliable design
c) HRS: Albert has installed electronics on the HRSL VDC
d) 3000 PMT?s from BABAR have arrived (putting them in smaller
boxes)
e) Manpower: relying on user support
f) GMp meeting Monday (9/24) 14:00
g) Working on neutron production and shielding for APEX
11) Ole Hansen
a) GIT: software version control system
i) Gives some details
ii) Hall C has invited a preacher to come here October 9th
iii) Hall C is very eager to use it
iv) Ole wants to be convinced
b) Analysis workshop is in the works
i) Still trying to decide on the date(s). (before or after
the Hall A Collaboration meeting)
ii) Possibly held jointly with Hall C
iii) Still developing a plan
c) Database server:
i) Finished migrating old databases to it
ii) Not visible offsite (need ssh tunnels)
iii) Accessible in the Counting House
d) Read up on SQL
i) Simple to convert text based to SQL format
ii) Will write some tools to use it and see what people
think
e) Computer Center is making noise about enhancing cyber-
security by requiring two factor authentication for Counting
House computers
i) Ole has misgivings
ii) Subject for the IT Steering committee
f) Still working on SOLID tracking
12) John LeRose
a) Keeping track of 12 GeV Upgrade progress
b) Encouraging SBS collaborators to finalize plans for the
coordinate detector
c) Spent an afternoon with Albert hooking up electronics in
LHRS
d) Consulting with Jixie on g2p optics
