Minutes of Hall A Group Meeting February 26, 2013
1) Thia Keppel
a) News from the Senior Staff meeting:
i) Benefits open enrollment continues until Friday (3/1)
ii) No sequestration news yet
iii) The State Department is focusing on Hampton Roads to
find ways to smooth out the Visa granting process. We can
expect some users and staff to be interviewed.
iv) A committee has been formed in the Physics Division to
come up with a more consistent form for the ESADs
v) BABAR equipment at SLAC is not going to Italy. We need to
declare by Friday if we want any of it. Thia has a list if
you?re interested. You must let Rolf know by Friday (3/1).
vi) It is annual user space cleanup time.
(1) Things in user spaces that appear to be surplus
have been tagged. Users have until the Users Group
Meeting in June to fill out the tags indicating that
the stuff is not surplus. If the tag has not been
filled out the stuff will be discarded. If users have
things that they want to be discarded they can send the
user office an e-mail and it will be discarded
forthwith.
vii) Transportainers: the lab is getting pressure from above
(high levels of DOE) to get rid of transportainers. The
plan is:
(1) Get rid of the bad ones (leaky etc.) first
(2) Try to keep a few near the end stations
viii) Budget briefing news:
(1) They have recognized that the old flat scenario
wasn?t realistic since we were in shutdown mode
(reduced spending on operations)
(2) In what we proposed there were 430 people on
staff. They have come back with 400 people.
(3) All 4 Halls are still there
(4) PAC days reduced (and total running time)
(5) Research funds specifically cut (we should be
conservative about hiring)
(6) Generally the message was positive, considering
the situation
ix) Future Facilities meeting news:
(1) FRIB is construction ready making it a category 1
(2) EIC is category 2 (still needs some R&D)
(a) JLAB looks good. Has high luminosity and a staged
version that only uses resistive magnets at first
b) The Hall A Annual report is out. Thanks to all for their
hard work.
i) See:

t.pdf
ii) Or http://arxiv.org/abs/1302.4324
2) Robin Wines
a) 12 GeV:
i) helping survey & alignment in getting the beam line in
place
ii) Ordered ceramic beam pipe for the raster magnet
iii) Supporting Compton upgrade
b) Ordering parts for 1st experiments including parts for the
wire target
c) Need more information on collimator and sieve locations
d) SBS:
i) Working on coils and iron cutouts
ii) Making good progress on the counterweight supports
e) APEX coils
f) PREX II shielding layout (Thia recommends checking with
RADCON before going too far)
g) HRS detectors
3) Ed Folts
a) Waiting for an O-ring for the target
b) Compton dipoles are now in place (will likely be surveyed
this week)
c) Raster hut work continues
d) Working on:
i) cryo-valves for the distribution can
ii) cryo warm return
iii) collimator control boxes
4) Bert Manzlak reminds all to check if they have any outstanding
training. Take the training or, if you think the training
requirement is obsolete, see your supervisor about changing
your training requirements
