Minutes of Hall A Group Meeting October 29, 2013
1)	Thia Keppel
a)	From the senior staff meeting:
i)	Appraisals:
(1)	self-assessment is overdue, think Hall A is OK
(2)	Next step set up an interview with Thia through
Stephanie
ii)	U-tube safety incident last week: gives details, being
investigated
iii)	Budgets:
(1)	Lab got a budget last week, only good for 1-2
months
(2)	Nuclear Physics got us more than the Continuing
Resolution
(3)	Stay lean on travel, materials, and supplies
(4)	Capital equipment looks OK (SBS and HPS anyway)
iv)	Accelerator readiness review went well (Hall A?s is
December 9-10)
v)	Testlab and TEDF will now start having Radiological
postings. Pay attention!
vi)	DNP meeting was a huge success (924 attendees)
(1)	EIC sessions were well attended too
vii)	PAC in July now will address new proposals
(1)	Separate PAC meeting will be held to set
priorities sometime between March ?14 and March ?15
(experiments won?t present)
(a)	With 60 PAC days/year/hall there is now a 7-10
year backlog of approved experiments in each Hall
(Hall A is 7 years excluding Møller and SOLID)
(b)	There?s a form to fill out for each approved
experiment. Spokespeople will be contacted by Thia
b)	Held meeting yesterday (10/28) with Accelerator, RADCON, and
us to discuss what might be reasonably possible to
accomplish in the spring run, given accelerator and beam
dump constraints..
i)	See http://opsweb.acc.jlab.org/TJ3/12GeV_CEBAF/AccII.html
(1)	Look at Hall A detector checkout and surrounding
items
ii)	Run is mid-March, 1-6 weeks possible, up to 5 microAmps
ok on the dump for this time.
iii)	Expect pulsed beam for a few days the up to 5 microAmps
CW
iv)	All prefer low energy (~4 GeV)
c)	SBS DOE annual review is next Monday and Tuesday (11/4-5)
2)	Robin Wines
a)	SBS:
i)	Support structure engineering analysis is done.
(1)	After internal review will start drawing package
ii)	Working on drawings for assembly hardware
iii)	Revising coil drawings. Expecting Best and Final offers
on Friday (11/1)
(1)	If offers are too high alternate plan is to buy
the racetrack coils and use the BNL saddle coil (~10%
reduction in acceptance)
iv)	Steel machining is in procurement
v)	Working on Cherenkov detector design
b)	Raster is still on hold because of tube coating issues
(suggests borrowing Hall C?s)
c)	Beamline drawings finished
d)	Working on Møller experiment beamline and construction
estimates
i)	Thia adds that Møller is aiming for a DOE review in
January ?14
3)	Ed Folts
a)	Working on:
i)	Detectors
ii)	Cryo
b)	Still leak checking the Compton (closing the laser hut waits
till the leak checking is done)
4)	Bert Manzlak
a)	There will be a machine tool assessment with DOE during the
1st week of December. If you work with machine tools there is
a document you will have to read and sign
b)	Reminds again test setups that will last more than 2 weeks
with a risk code greater than 1 need to be setup in halist.
Post the tracking number at the setup. (questions to Bert,
manzlak at jlab.org )
5)	Longwu Ou gives a talk Reflectivity measurements of Gas
Cherenkov mirrors
