Title: SIDIS in the other direction; accessing target fragmentation at CLAS12
By Dr. Timothy Hayward (University of Connecticut)
Abstract:
The semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) process, where a virtual photon scatters off a nucleon with sufficient momentum transfer to probe individual partons, has been pivotal in advancing our understanding of nucleonic structure and has provided a wealth of information on quark flavor, transverse momentum and spin. Traditional SIDIS measurements focus on hadrons produced from the struck parton. However, this perspective captures only part of the story. Studying the hadrons produced in the target fragmentation region (TFR), where hadrons originate from the spectator partons that did not interact with the virtual photon, provides a critical test of our comprehensive understanding of the SIDIS production mechanism and offers additional insights into QCD dynamics that remain inaccessible in the current fragmentation region (CFR). We will discuss the importance of target fragmentation studies and how they can complement and extend the insights gained from CFR investigations. Additionally, we will present initial measurements and future prospectives from the CLAS12 detector at Jefferson Lab, demonstrating the potential of TFR studies to enrich our knowledge of hadron production and QCD processes.
