Exploring Hadron Structure Through Exclusive Kaon Electroproduction
Abstract:
Meson electroproduction is an important tool for the study of the hadronic structure. The relative simple structure of mesons makes them very suitable in our quest to understand the structure and interaction of hadrons on the basis of QCD. At large distance scales, studies of meson electroproduction could provide information on how QCD describes the interaction and existence of elementary particles. Smaller distance scales can be accessed by increasing the virtual photon mass (Q2) in electron scattering experiments. In this regime, Generalized Parton Distributions provide the most complete description of the non-perturbative physics. In this talk, I will explore the results of my recent analysis of kaon electroproduction cross sections, extracted from E93-018 and the E01-004 (FPI-2) experimental data acquired at JLab in the p(e,e’K+)Λ channel. The cross section was fully separated at values of Q2 of 1.0 (GeV/c)2 (with center of mass energy W=1.81 GeV), 1.36 and 2.07 (GeV/c)2 (W=2.31 GeV). The kaon form factor (FK) was extracted from the longitudinal cross section in these kinematics using the Regge model by Vanderhaeghen, Guidal, and Laget. Results show FK to be systematically lower than the empirical monopole form, although still compatible with this form within the estimated uncertainties. The resulting kaon form factor values were combined with the world kaon form factor data to extract the kaon transverse change density. I will also discuss the outlook on future studies of systems containing strangeness with kaon electroproduction at this new 12 GeV era at JLab.
