Hi,
I just talked with Brad Cumbia from Accelerator, who is responsible for
Accelerator networking.
Recall that Accelerator will be managing a number of devices in Hall D
and the Tagger area, including four power supplies. They plan to locate
EPICS VME crates near the devices and use VME modules to communicate
with them. The VME cpus need network connections, and the plan is that
Accelerator will run their own networking system and not use the Hall D
system. They further will manage the VME crates and cpu's. They will
have their own network switch in the Telecom room.
We would like to minimize the number of copper cables that run into the
hall. E.g. we will only run fiber from our Rack Room to the hall, then
convert to copper to connect to devices in the hall.
Brad has agreed to follow the same strategy, i.e. to place another of
their switchs in the hall and connect to it via fiber from their switch
in the Telecom room.
Since we plan to run a lot of fiber between the Rack Room and the hall
it makes sense to run an additional couple of pairs for them so they
won't have to arrange for a special run from the Telecom room to the
hall (Bryan...will you be installing fiber from the Telecom room to the
hall for another purpose?). Instead they'll use some of the fibers we
plan to run from the Telecom room to the Rack room, patch into our big
fiber bundle going down to the hall, then connect to their switch from
the patch panel in the hall.
Thus they will not need to run any fibers at all, and all we have to do
is add a a few pairs to the large bundles we already plan to run.
Note that we don't have well developed plans for the Tagger area, and
perhaps copper runs from the Tagger service building to the Tagger area
are not a concern, not sure...
Thoughts, comments...?
Thanks,

Sincerely,
Elliott
