[Halld-cps] [EXTERNAL] Re: Hall D CPS meeting on Monday

Dear All,
Below some comments concerning the coil insulation lifetime.
   In the conceptual design we "utilize" 1.5T*3m magnet.

   Since we need only 1/5 of its maximum field we may reduce the winding
density
in such a way that we'll have say 3-5 mm distance between wires in coils.
    In such a case only straight portions of  winding, parallel to the beam
axis, need to be insulated; the curved "return" portions will be "naked",
thus  insulated by an air gap of 3-5 mm, with some ceramic spacer in
between to prevent touching.
   Therefore, although the "return" part is exposed to significantly
higher radiation, it does not affect the insulation lifetime
   That's why only straight parts of windings were  addressed in my
estimations of insulation lifetime, which is 1160 days for kapton and 5500
days for the fiberglass material.
  Sorry for confusion.
