Private:Hall D Staff Meeting, August 2, 2010
Hall D Staff Meeting Notes for August 2, 2010
Present: Fernando Barbosa, George Biallas, Eugene Chudakov (chair),
Hovanes Egiyan, Mark Ito, David Lawrence, Lubomir Pentchev, Elton
Smith, Simon Taylor, Elliott Wolin, Glenn Young, Beni Zihlmann
Eugene
* PAC meeting is coming up, GlueX will make presentations, Aug. 23
* Lehman review: Glenn has outlined program, two talks from Hall D,
Eugene and Tim, like last time
+ there might be separate talk on solenoid
* FDC start of construction pushed to Nov. (perhaps Oct.)
* CDC construction delay driven by tightness of tolerances of plastic
feed-throughs
+ Curtis Meyer thinks time can be made up later
* On the recommendation to consider building a new solenoid: decision
was supposed to be made before Lehman review, but magnet has not
been tested yet
* DOPS is tight, please try to limit purchases
Beni
* delay of 4 to 6 weeks in CDC construction due to new mold for
feed-throughs and subsequent testing of new parts
+ this is the last time we change the mold
* FDC: taking cosmic ray data
+ understanding of data improves every week
+ trying 90% argon, worsens Lorentz deflections, might help on
L-R ambiguity resolution
+ Elton: what about oxygen contamination? Beni: old sensor does
not work, getting ready to try new one
* TOF work on walk correction on hold for now
* will be preparing talk for [?] conference
Fernando
* FDC boards for wire planes received, will work on inspection
tomorrow
* we have hired a technician for Hall D electronics, 8/16 start date
* signal cables for FDC, CDC: contract not awarded, will be this
week, 50 k$ less than what was expected (about 20%)
* Elliott: FCAL cables? Fernando: they failed UL certification
* Eugene: HV? Fernando: waiting on account/activity code to use,
Glenn will get an answer
Hovanes
* plan is to swap cubicle from 2nd floor to 3rd floor
* Eugene: Rusty has a plan to rearrange 3rd floor at some point
Mark
* b[1]π analysis script running weekly now, producing plots, based on
David's scripts
* new release: sim-recon-2010-07-28
* generalized particle gun, perl-based, written
* work on David's CCDB spec some more
David
* uniform b-field document
+ negative benefit from uniform field
+ lower field at target allows particles out
+ high field downsteam good for momentum analysis
* calibration database specification document: get agreement with
Mark, release to group
* Primex II run in Hall B this Fall: trying to get simulation code
and data acquisition going, consulting work
* they took away the 48-core machine, did get some final runs with
performance monitoring package working, data needs to be analyzed
Lubomir
* gas investigations: running Garfield
+ with 40/60 (Ar/CO[2]) drift velocity depends on electric
field, electric field depends on position in cell
+ with 90/10, constant velocity, nearly linear time-to-distance
relationship
+ simulation: tails from 40/60, good resolution with 90/10
+ dis-advantages: speed is higher so Lorentz angle is bigger
+ constant drift velocity benefit might outweigh bigger lorentz
angle cost
+ Eugene: stability of chamber with new mix? Beni: efficiency
high, lower dark current
* field wires, best to have at 0 V, cylindrical cell field
configuration
* thickness of mylar endcaps: small fraction of target thickness,
want to double thickness, from 1/2 to 1 mil
Simon
* working on tracking
* uniform field study with David
* Kalman fitter work
+ propagation of error matrix involves symmetric matrices, can
save time here
* Lorentz effect problem: simulated in HDGeant
+ 40/60 Lorenz effect is linear, 90/10 it is not
* single particle response worked on in past, multi-particle needs to
be studied, looking at particle ID
* Fernando: CDC same gas for both? Simon: no deflections along the
wire in CDC, Lorentz angle effect not present.
* Elton: FDC coordinator? Lubomir: he started today
George
* coil 1 ready to test
+ need to get cryocan prepared
+ warm piping systems need welding and repair
+ chimney tubing and electrical need more design
+ platform: beam needs to be added
+ lots of assembly work
+ estimate: mid-September for everything
+ Eugene: start cool-down Sep. 1? George: perhaps
* coil 3
+ welding up the chimney
+ then can put on cover and do leak test
* coil 2
+ plan to insert g10 strips looking problematic
o some conductors cannot be supported because [?] are in
the way
o gaps not as uniform as originally thought
o labor intensive
o alternative: put in posts, tack weld them into place, 180
of them
* tranfer line drawing near done
* BCAL interface not worked on lately
* Civil construction: jack plates on piers in right position, welding
de-positioned them by 1/2 in., a few need re-working
Elliott
* drill press, band saw, squirreled away if we need them
* online: 2 students finishing up
+ end of week stop work on new items, start work on
documentation
+ adding more objects to DANA-EVIO interface
+ Andrew will continue in Fall, Justin as well
+ talking to Vardan Gyurjyan and Dave Heddle on CLARA method for
getting events into the display
* coil test
+ cryocan, valves had to be rebuilt, holes for relief have to be
drilled
+ power supply: water a continuing saga, increasing hose volume
+ filters will be needed on water
+ printer arrived
+ Lakeshore came back: pinched ribbon cable
+ HMI programming mostly done
+ racks are out there
+ OSP has been delayed since going cold has been delayed
+ could not get power supply up to 1500 A, need an inductive
load, will test controls at 300 A
Elton
* MOU with Santa Maria has been signed
* BCAL construction proceeding on schedule
+ fibers are coming in
+ fabrication going well
* SiPM decision
+ getting a contract in place, paperwork is ready to go
+ concern about lifetime due to radiation damage
o update meeting with Glenn on Friday
o still marginal
o still an anomalous 1x1 cell that was put into Hall A,
factor of 4 higher than 3x3 cells
o more measurements waiting on Carl's return
o Eugene: Matt Shepherd's calculation demands lower noise
o a factor of 5 in dark noise might be a better standard
that the 10 used up to now
o cooling will help, looks like it must be done
o Eugene: collaboration meeting is in Sep., but perhaps a
meeting before that is needed to decide
* FCAL production is proceeding
+ reworking CW voltage dividers to take care of breakdown
+ they should probably build prototypes; Fernando may want to
visit then
