Private:Hall D Staff Meeting, August 16, 2010

Present: Eugene Chudakov (chair), Hovanes Egiyan, Mark Ito, David
Lawrence, Lubomir Pentchev, Yi Qiang, Sascha Somov, Simon Taylor, Tim
Whitlatch, Elliott Wolin, Beni Zihlmann

Eugene

* DOPS account saga: looks like some money available for travel to
the collaboration meeting in Regina. Eugene, Elton, and TBD.
* BIASOL account saga: a lot of money spent in July, we need to stop
something
+ Tim: put coil 2 on hold
* PAC is coming up
* Lehman review is coming up
+ dry runs at end of August
+ talks from Tim and Eugene plus a special session on solenoid

Beni

* CDC
+ 1st article straws have arrived
+ packaging will change, straws within a straw, one by one,
whole thing in plastic box, plastic box in crate
+ Tim: rest of straws by end of August
+ plastic parts for downstream ends being reworked still
+ CMU assembling frame with two endplates, gluing inner shell
o some issues on some parts
+ no date for review yet, around time when first straws are
glued into frame
* FDC
+ we were running out of gas last week, new gas will arrive on
Wed., then start taking cosmics again
+ want to install FADC's to monitor wires. Firmware upgrade
attempt broke them. Problem under investigation
+ Fernando Barbosa has electronics to test on-board
discriminators
o now taking analog to post-amp to external discriminator
o want to get data from two wire planes at same time
* working on talk for Confinement conference
* Eugene: Fernando's procurement for drift chamber signal cables
awarded, $50k cheaper than expected

Mark

* Discussions on-going with Paul Eugenio and Fernando on splitting
scheme for time-of-flight.
+ Several schemes will be tried on prototype
+ New Flash 250's will be able to accomodate positive-going
signals, possibly convenient for dynode signal from base.
* Further work on calibration database design with David. Some of the
database tables are being re-designed.
* Working on a cost estimate for TOF construction

Hovanes

* picked a computer configuration, Randy Hartman will write the PR
* office move on track for Sep. 1

Yi

* AmBe source test
+ will need 12 1x1 mm sensors from Hamamatsu @ $118
+ irradiate, monitor for 4 days
* Carl has looked at 1x1 mm SiPM's
+ both the Hall A and source exposed sensors
+ noisy still, but has seen recovery in both
+ Hall A still a factor of 5 noisier
* Igor Senderovich sent SiPM for tagger hall, sample sensor
+ set up test in F117
+ working now without DAQ
+ will be irradiated
+ Beni: talked to Igor, will need FADC's, have assumed that
range selection can be done remotely, instead it is set by a
jumper
* coil test: working on HMS screen, debugging power supply control

Lubomir

* attended Conference on Applications of Accelerators in Research and
Industry
* accelerator conference, but also mixture of other topics
* standard model talk
* ITER presentation
* talk on element 117; Dubna
* using accelerator for atmospheric studies: PIXE

Sascha

* worked on bit-wise simulation for trigger
* radiation study for tagger hall
+ using Pavel Degtiarenko's version of GEANT, put on tape
+ geometry for tagger not in good shape, electron did not make
it to beam dump
+ new geometry entered, problems with overlapping volumes
+ postponed simulating splash back from dump directly
+ concentrating on scattering of electrons from pipe
o magnet, beam pipe need to be positioned
* William Gu debugging TI/TD board, will finish by end of the month
+ Brian Moffit will need to update drivers for TI and CTP
* Eugene: we bought components for new Flash 250
* worked on studies for microstrip readout for pair spectrometer
* magnet from BNL: found another, factor of 3 lighter
+ background simulation: magnet is pretty good
+ 1.5 T-m
+ gem, microstrips, or scintillator read-out possible
+ need negotiation on how to ship
+ same magnet as that used in Hall B
+ device for making map exists
+ Eugene: when to ship? Tim: cannot be before Dec, may not be
until jan or feb,
+ need to reduce gap, Tim: to be done in Hall

Elliott

* collecting computers for Blue Crab test
+ Tim: Dave Butler should get a nice one
* online: Wed. meeting, Justin and Andrew will give their
end-of-summer talks
+ both staying on
* online stuff:
+ event source for event display
+ evio improvements
* coil test
+ power down in the Test Lab
+ stand is up, platform on top, grouted soon
+ ladder is in, no cage needed
+ Tim: hi-pot test was good, no shorts
+ 1 inch hose to replace 1/2 in hose for cooling water
o Tom does not think we need filters, George wants them
* Eugene: PLC programming, we need someone who knows something about
it
+ Yi: Mark Wissmann is tweaking his PLC program, now a good time
to learn
+ Eugene: when testing starts, also a good time

Simon

• running garfield for 90/10 with regard to avalanche deflection, how
to incorporate into simulation, simle for 40/60, for 90/10 effectis
non-linear • moving simulation away from start time assumed at zero, t0
for time-based tracking, first start counter and tof and bcal, hope to
associate tracks with t0, help with DPhysicsEvent • put tagger
information into DANA framework • for particle ID, need better than 0.5
ns from • looking at multi-particle final states, with em background
turned on.

Tim

* working on a spreadsheet on labor needed for next year:
engineering, design, and technical
* preparing for Lehman review
* civil:
+ roof is going on the Hall
+ tagger floor should have been poured
* working on tagger magnet spec for procurement
+ we will go with 10-06
* BCAL wedges have come in, 12 total so far
* Hall ready Nov. 30
+ solenoid installation delayed
* looking at hiring techs for fdc
* Eugene: trailer, do we need it? communications cannot come this
fiscal year, $150k total

David

* n-pi-pi-pi events at IU, looking to confirm Jake Bennett's results
+ 40% getting reconstructed, without background 65%
+ put in a new factory DPhysicsEvent
o for each DAQ event, possibly nmore than one physics event
o looking for resonances in z-t plane
o working right for some things, needs more study
* uniformity studies
+ if we build new magnet what are the specs?
+ trying to get right current for a BaBar like magnet design
+ we would give up some low momentum charged tracks
+ on-going
* calibration database work
* 1900 farm jobs to get efficiency for ALT1 and Kalman-SIMD, about
half done
* some work on workshop on parallelism, poster design proposed,
taking place in January (possibly)
* some time spent on helping with software for PrimEx II run
+ there is concern about time needed to get ready
