    Present: Eugene Chudakov (chair), Hovanes Egiyan, David Lawrence, Mark

Eugene

      * Secretary Chu has announced a pay freeze for two years
           + promotions will be honored
      * We do not have a budget yet
           + Continuing Resolution until March most likely
           + problem with Project: 2010 lower in budget because of
             front-loading in 2009, lower level continues in FY11
           + full year at CR level a problem
           + Glenn looking for items that can wait for 6-9 months
      * Working on ETC change request, partially submitted
           + 10% increase in our budget
      * Coil 1 test finished
           + reached 1200 A, a big success
           + many lessons learned
           + still some questions
                o lag of field behind current
                o field is reversed with respect to expectations
                o problems with quench protection
      * Request for timesheet-related information:
           + please collect hours actually spend on various budget
             accountings in a typical two week period
           + for Eugene's information
           + important for all 12 GeV accounts and for BIASOL


Mark

      * Started work on FSU contract
      * Continued work on FIU MOU
           + draft being circulated
      * Work on calibration database
           + conversion of calibration files specified
      * Upgrade of Hall D webserver from halldweb1 to halldnew soon
      * Eugene: status physics analyses?
           + David: meeting held with IU folks, Elton, David, Simon to
             discuss issues with error, PID figure-of-merit
      * Eugene: BCAL readout simulations?
           + Being discussed in Calorimeter group meetings
      * Eugene: TOF?
           + Problem with glueing long counters in the preferred vertical
             orientation, not enough headroom in lab
           + Problem with noise in FADC solved by rearranging location of
             boards
                o FSU has need for a high-power crate when then arrive here
      * Start Counter
           + Using SiPM's looks promising
                o damage rate comparable to downstream end of BCAL
                o will be used for timing, not energy summing
                o rate at 10 to 15 kHz
                o still some tests to do
      * Target
           + Meeting tomorrow to assess status


David

      * Obtained raw event format definition from the DAQ group
           + started writing code to do translation
      * Workshop/Tutorial
           + issues with 32-bit Linux, Kalman SIMD instructions:
             allocations on heap do not respect 16-bit boundaries, solution
             is being tested
           + Simon has a SIMD-bypass solution as well
           + Eugene: registration count?
                o>  30 people have registered
           + Sascha: guy from RAL will be here Jan. 4th-9th
                o will give Lab seminar on Kalman filtering, GPU's
                o Elton: special tracking meeting perhaps, with Hall D
                  folks


Yi

      * Coil test
           + fast daq devices worked
           + daq was blacked out due to protection[?]
           + Eugene: does it need to be re-done?
                o that would be best, needs planning
      * Helping Carl to prepare for SiPM test
           + alternate instruments[?]
           + script for data analysis
      * Recovery test
           + 4 samples for 60 degree test ready to go


Hovanes

      * Work on ETC
           + more details on [?]
           + budget increased a bit, 7% higher for data acquisition and
             online
           + need guidance on time allocation per year
           + Eugene: this FY?
                o 40 k$ of purchases, work on control systems, daq systems,
                  190 k$ total for this year
                o Sascha: trigger commissioning can start this fy
                     # Vardan Gyurjyan willing to help
                     # Sergey Boiarinov interested in working on common
                       tools
                o 56 man-weeks scheduled, daq, halld, electronics
      * Eugene: evaluation on methods to calibrate magnets?
           + no work further work done recently
      * Working on alternative polarimetry scheme using self-contained
        geant4 simulation


Sascha

      * Documents on neutron background simulation for tagger finished
           + SiMP or PMT for microscope: not clear
           + Richard leaning toward SiPM's
                o use longer fibers, put box on floor, use plastic
                  shielding: gives about 20 mRem/hour
                o expect lifetime of 3 months with factor of 5 increase in
                  dark current
                o Richard: can run with dark current elevated by factor of
                  50
           + issue with operation at high rate, 4 MHz in this case
           + need amplifiers for PMT solutions, Franz's fixed array type or
             multi-anode
      * Almost done with note on FLUKA/GEANT simulation of damage to BCAL
        SiPM's
      * Elton: what is rate for start counter?
           + 10-15 kHz per paddle
      * looking at Hall D ADC plan
           + added some steps
           + adding details of test
           + adding details of our involvement
           + Chris Cuevas will use 80 weeks man-weeks for the total project
           + DAQ and Hall D will contribute 26 weeks
      * Bit-wise trigger simulation
           + hopefully results by the next collaboration meeting
      * Ashot Gasparian talked to Sascha: needs small project
           + mapping of pair spectrometer was proposed by Ashot


Dmitry

      * Updating calibration database
      * Working prototypes:
           + website
           + command line tools
           + draft spec of file format
      * Conversion from files to database underway


Tim

      * Pair spectrometer
           + want to get magnet here
           + will not get power supply
      * ETC work
           + getting FDC stuff now
           + working with Phil Kessler
      * Hall D
           + hardware missing for door at top of ramp
           + RFE soon
      * Elton: FCAL request from Matt?
           + close to Tim's top priority
      * Sascha: ready to finalize downstream end of tagger vacuum chamber


Lubomir

      * Clean room will be delayed by three weeks due to power hook-up
           + staging area is needed, that should be available
           + hiring freeze could impact negatively
                o Tim: technician positions to be released, hopefully soon
      * PCB's are all back, cleaned, they look good
           + Chris tested half, no problems
      * Foils
           + first article foils are here, being inspected
           + Fernando Barbosa says they look better than those for
             full-scale prototype
           + some problems: finish on copper, some wrinkles
      * Tension measurement system tested
           + apply current, use permanent magnet, find resonance
           + use same laser sensor as used for cathode foils
           + driver arrived for stepper motor
           + proof of principle in hand
           + missing strongback
                o problem with hole placement
           + beginning of January stringing apparatus ready
      * Methane in gas
           + after pulsing disappears
           + can reach 4×10^5, factor of 4 higher than 90/10 Ar-CO[2]


Elliott

      * Goal: assess what went right and what went wrong with coil 1 test
           + quench protection
           + slow dump
      * coil 3 next, then 4, then 2
      * question about opening coil 4 being discussed
      * will reuse coil 1 wiring for each of 4 coils
      * group discussing having a review of quench protection system


Elton

      * 4-hour SOTR training, go through procurement procedures,
        recommended (perhaps required) for SOTR's
      * Replacement solenoid
           + pursuing contract with group at MIT (Joe Minervini), for
             conceptual design
           + decide on conductor, parameter definition, to yield
             design/build contract
           + about 250 k$ (for CD)
      * ETC: cooling and bias feedback response for SiPM's
           + mechanical: Jim Fochtman
           + pre-amp and summing boards: Fernando
           + bias and feed back: Jack McKinnon[?]
      * Tomorrow reps from Hamamatsu visit
           + Hall B: PMT's, Si strips detectors
           + Hall D: SiPM's
      * major decisions
           + segmentation for BCAL read-out
                o Dan bennett has been doing studies
                o Andrei Semenov will try to reproduce
           + monitoring for BCAL
                o progress has been made
                o limitations exist on what can be done
                o by Feb. or Mar.
      * Discussion with Santa Maria on role in procurement of SiPM. Perhaps
        3/4 of them. Tight schedule.
           + Glenn: question on foreign sole source and approval from DOE
             office?
