Subject: [GlueX] Report from solenoid coil test preliminary review
To all Hall D collaborators concerned with the solenoid coil test,
This morning we held a preliminary review of the solenoid coil test
safety design with the folks that will have to sign off on the OSP
(Operational Safety Procedure) document for the coil test later this
summer. Staff members from the Physics dept, EH&S division, Accelerator
division and the other halls participated, along with several members of
the Hall D group. Speakers included Tim Whitlach, George Bialas, Josh
Ballard, me, and Cody Dickover (electrical engineer on loan from the FEL
division).
The meeting was not intended to be an OSP review. It's purpose was to
present background and preliminary technical information to the OSP
reviewers and to give them an informal forum for asking questions and
making comments. They were also asked to point out things that need
more work, and let us know if we've missed anything that would be
required in the final OSP review.
The meeting took up the entire morning and went quite well. Many
questions were asked, there was much back-and-forth discussion, many
suggestions for improvements were made, some simplifications to our
procedures and strategies were suggested, and experts told us about
features of our hardware that does not appear in the manuals that we
didn't know about.
The general consensus from the reviewers was that we are on the right
track, that we appear to have considered all relevant safety concerns of
the coil test, and that we are not overlooking any major safety concern.
Our plan is to obtain the signed OSP by the end of July and begin
cooling down the first coil by early Aug. Towards the end of the July
we will submit final documentation to the review committee, and with
luck they will review it and sign the OSP without the need for another
full meeting. But of course it is their call whether they want to meet
with us again.
If you have any questions feel free to contact Tim or me.

Sincerely,
Elliott
