Hall D Staff Meeting, November 21, 2011
Present: Fernando Barbosa, Vladimir Berdnikov, Eugene Chudakov (chair),
John Domingo, Hovanes Egiyan, Javier Gomez, Nerses Gevorgyan, Mark Ito,
David Lawrence, John Leckey, Bert Manzlak, Lubomir Pentchev, Yi Qiang,
Dmitry Romanov, Elton Smith, Sascha Somov, Ivan Tolstukhin, Elliott
Wolin, Glenn Young
Announcements: Eugene
* specify conferences of interest for fy12
+ respond to Eugene today
+ look at JLab web page
+ also look at CERN conference page
* budget: nothing to say right now
* bcal readout scheme
+ want to add inner layer
+ adds about 370 k$
+ not easy to expand existing system, boards on edges need to be
designed with segmentation defined
+ with procurement of FADC 250 coming up, little time to ask for
more modules
+ perhaps stage upgrade, no TDC's at first for example
Beam Test: Elton and Sascha
* Matt brought everything two weeks ago
* installed under tagger in Hall B
* electronics has been set-up, flashes working, data taken over
weekend
* one crate with all new boards: TI, SD, Linux controller, three
flashes
* 10 paddles in trigger
* took cosmics
* looked at beam data
* issues:
+ system crashes at high rate
+ cannot terminate run properly, must reboot
* Bryan Moffit came with some patches
+ were able to take data
+ John and Matt have looked at them
* Some tuning left to do.
* Problems with storing data, 50 GB available on local machines
+ shipment to tape still to come, perhaps tomorrow
* trigger rate limited by data acquisition rate, few kHz
* implementation of scalers on FADC
+ Ed sent function over the weekend to do this
+ trying to implement their use now
* 2 GeV electrons into Hall B, current location at 5% of beam energy,
about 100 MeV
* Bert: work control document, is one posted?
+ Elton: one on cork-board, one just outside the gate
Safety: Bert
* if there are any tests, in the EEL, or any of the Halls, work
control documents needed
* using OSP format in EH&S manual, 33.10[?]
* must include:
+ in scope of test
+ training requirements
+ identification of the gatekeeper
* this requirement may be new to a lot of people
* involves a task hazard analysis
Budget: Javier
* we get extended to dec. 16
* beyond that, uncertain
Engineering: Eugene
* upstream platform: a large portion has been installed
* beamline in alcove: installation proceeds, a lot done
+ small dipole downstream of long permanent magnet installed
* color of the solenoid currently battleship grey
+ contest running right now for final color scheme
Electronics: Fernando
* flash 250, ready to award contract
+ want to make sure the modules we have are OK
+ failures during tests, simple fixes, two modules with firmware
issues
+ 700 modules total
+ BCAL number still up in air
* HPV[?] for CDC are all here
* ground rules:
+ F117 tools and equipment have disappeared--room will be locked
all the time.
+ safety issues: refer them to Chris Stanislav and Fernando
+ borrowing modules, chassis? go through Fernando
+ other equipment as well, check out with Chris
+ Elton: modules recently bought from CAEN?
o Fernando: everything should be logged, let Fernando or
Chris know
* Testing of pre-amps:
+ 22 have been tested
+ Cody setting up test station, very close, in two weeks perhaps
Calorimetry: Elton
* BCAL:
+ all modules completed
+ final delivery Dec. 1, last five modules, includes baby BCAL
* Sascha: when do we do the test of the baby BCAL? wants to use new
trigger electronics
+ Elton: electronics boards have not gone out yet
* FCAL
+ beam test underway
+ problems with boards for CW bases
o working through issues with vendor
o first 500 have been built
* readout
+ readiness review at Santa Maria for testing of SiPM being
planned
o shipped [some number of?] SiPM's for dark box set-up
o Elton and Carl Zorn will go
+ testing here: all boards out, should be back by middle of next
week
Tracking: Lubmoir
* working on second FDC package
+ first 2 cells went well
+ 3rd on Fri., found minor problems, required gluing, that
requires waiting
+ another problem found today, perhaps by tomorrow
+ Wed evening start testing
* next wire frame, for 4th cell
+ HV caps were replaced, went to 3-kV caps, ran out of 4-kV ones
+ dark current increases after HV applied, conditioned, but
still increasing slowly
+ decided to replace HV caps on another wire frame (5th) with 3
kV: no problem seen
+ will continue with 5th
* work to be done on first package
+ working with wiring
+ cooling loops for first cell installed
+ wiring for HV tricky
o Fernando: for HV connections, only Chris should be doing
the work
+ low voltage wiring also needs to be done
+ one cable per four pre-amps original plan, tricky to do this,
may have to use a different type of cable
+ not clear what is the best way to attach HV, especially for
first package
+ Eugene: work with mock-up showed some difficulties, may need
to adjust plan
TOF: Mark
* default configuration, 8-stage PMT's on the high-rate counters,
10-stage on the others
* motivation for high gain, Elton: low efficiency on prototype led to
desire for higher gain
* contract with FSU
+ complete set of draft documents exist
+ copies sent to Procurement
+ need to get into final form
Start Counter: Mark
* decision/design of SiPM read-out next big issue, several options,
driven by restricted geometry:
+ use BCAL device: 4x4 array of 3 mm x 3 mm sensors
+ use BCAL device with two-channel read-out scheme
+ standard packages from Hamamatsu
+ package our own SMD's on a custom board
* Fernando: electronics schematic same for all configurations
* Mark will send Fernando geometry information
Coherent Bremsstrahlung Beam: Eugene
* meeting with Ken Livingston last week
* recommends goniometer used in Europe
* 5 degrees of freedom
* would have to customize Newport product
* range of motion in vertical, few mm is stock, we need 5 cm
* all wafers mounted on a ring/disk that turns
* must align crystal in all three Euler angles, need to arrange
polarization plane
* Ken looking into what is required, talking with the company
