Private:Hall D Staff Meeting, July 2, 2012
Present: Eugene Chudakov (chair), Hovanes Egiyan, Mark Ito, Vanik
Kakoyan, David Lawrence, John Leckey, Bert Manzlak, Lubomir Pentchev,
Yi Qiang, Sascha Somov, Elton Smith, Simon Taylor, Elliott Wolin, Beni
Zihlmann
Eugene
* Voluntary Separation Program: all should be aware of the offer
* Lab-Directed R&D
+ right now the group is busy
+ in general DOE has no independent fund for R&D at JLab
+ money will be taken from operations
+ projects that run in Hall, can qualify
* consolidate space--Elton: transportainer of stuff from the magnets?
Elliott: Tom Carstens would know about it
* Lehman review
+ will be one in November
+ address re-baselining of the project
+ unclear: big yearly review or not
+ want to keep contingency at 20% of remaining work
* PAC
+ one proposal conditionally approved, one deferred
+ letters of intent: one got encouragement, pion polarizability
* we are encouraged lab-wide to push procurements forward into this
fiscal year, plan even for beginning of next fiscal year
* some funds from DOPS left at end of this year, reasonable requests
entertained
+ Elton: scintillators with phototubes
Beni
* next week: meeting for gas system, will develop inventory list
* DAQ system for Linux almost ready to run
* after grounding of FDC package #3, move into EEL for testing
* playing with fsgen to create e^+e^- pairs to study inverse DVCS
Hovanes
* looking at things to buy
+ scaler modules
+ FPGA modules
+ serial console servers
* barcode scanner not working well, ask for another one
* portable NIM crate and portable VME crate would be nice to have
Elton
* BCAL work mainly
* Zisis and two students coming next week
* ESB work: Tara Bogart working on monitoring, DAQ is running
* light guides: first shipment scheduled for this week, but a week
behind schedule
* new boards should arrive pretty soon
* student working with Jim Fochtman making box to test read-out
modules
Bert
* there will be an Emergency Management Self-Assessment next week
+ safety wardens and managers may be quizzed
+ anyone in area can be questioned by a reviewer
* late this afternoon: put your dosimeter in the rack for change-out
+ Elton: rack near Hall D? David: Becky Mosbrucker says not for
two years
* F117, two weeks ago, concern in passageway about solvent smell
+ Medical Director asked for air sampling, done last Tuesday
+ waiting for results to come back
Yi
* Ben Laurent[?] looking at SiPM production data taken by Bobby,
re-tested some samples, samples consistent with Hamamatsu data,
only one outlier out of about 1000 devices.
* next ask Ben for cross-talk and after-pulsing measurements to
optimize bias voltage
* working on a simulation environment for HDRICH detector and
simulation of J/$psi;
* Elton: did inventory, lost 4 SiPM's, spare SiPM's might be needed
+ ordered 4k units, enough for 50 modules, will have 48
+ extras are scattered
+ Will Brooks: Hamamatsu will allow order at previous price,
$565 each, $600 including testing
Sascha
* met with Dan Sober and Franz Klein on strategy for fixed array
+ need to decide on counter size, light guides, and mounting
structure
+ Dan running transport program, finds agreement with Sascha's
simulation
+ tagging efficiency for amorphous radiation: Dan is studying
it, sees degradation at endpoint energy, can move quadrupole
+ Dan will review counter sizes and positions for fixed array
+ PMT specifications: not much progress, Fernando Barbosa
willing to help with electronics
+ Sasha will outline SOW for fabrication and testing of fixed
array, will assemble at CUA
* discussions with Richard: microscope and pair spect. will use 50
micron SiPM
* last week Hamamatsu returned call, will get quotes from them this
week
+ will use 3x3 mm sensor for pair spectrometer
+ may add more sensors in the future, e. g., 100-micron devices
for start counter
+ 900 to 1000 sensors
* also asked for quote for low granularity pair spectrometer counter
PMTs, will need 18 of them
* Fernando has ideas on how to couple WLS and sensors for pair
spectrometer
* Ivan Tolstukhin will come at beginning of August
* DAQ for BCAL: 32-bit vs. 64-bit issue being wrestled with
* also working on simulation for eta rare decays
David
* working with students on:
+ mini-BCAL
+ ROOTSpy
* post-doc from UMass was here, got him going on pion polarization
stuff
* got an abstract in for Chiral Dynamics 2012 on pion polarization
Simon
* working on diagnostic histograms for b1pi analysis
* standardizing parametrization for tracks in final object, including
the 5x5 covariance matrix
* studying running with 1200 A vs. 1500 A magnet current
* improving algorithm for determining vertex
Mark
* discussions underway on the scope of the data challenge
* start counter readout boards being populated: they look nice
Lubomir
* dehumidifier at Blue Crab went out over weekend, some spare parts
were exposed
* 4th package installed a week ago, found one cathode off by 15
degrees
+ split the package in half and re-assembled successfully
+ continue today with testing of 4th pafkage, finish by Thursday
* beginning of next week: refurbish 2nd package
+ 2nd package back at blue crab now
* testing of spare parts:
+ 1st wire frame did not work
+ 2nd OK
+ 3rd having problems, has HV caps that were not replaced,
covered with Humiseal now
* according to schedule, finish production end of year
+ extra tasks not originally anticipated: build some wire
frames, refurbish packages 1 and 2
Elliott
* working on Fastrack schedule for solenoid test
+ talked to everyone except Tom Carstens
+ Tom and Tim Whitlatch are discussing how to transfer Tom's MS
Project schedule
+ critical path ends up going through cryo installation, though
details are missing
+ manpower: Josh Ballard and Mark Stevens were over subscribed,
juggling things so that they are OK
* Dave Abbott working on raw data tape stuff, should be done by end
of July
* helping Josh with temperature, humidity read-out
