  Hall D Staff Meeting, April 20, 2020

Present: Fernando Barbosa, Eugene Chudakov (chair), Mark Dalton,
Alexandre Deur, Hovanes Egiyan, Sergey Furletov, Mark Ito, Igal Jaegle,
Keigo Mizutani, Lubomir Pentchev, Patrizia Rossi, Elton Smith, Sascha
Somov, Simon Taylor, Tim Whitlatch, Beni Zihlmann

    Announcements, Eugene

  * Lab is considering scenarios for resumption of normal operations.
One option is to start with a six week run this summer. No decisions
    yet.
  * The UGBoD requested a delay of a month in the PAC schedule. No
    decisions here.

    Announcements, Patrizia

  * Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA): memo to ADs soon on how to
approach new areas of research at the Lab
  * LDRD: mandatory pre-proposal this time

    Problems Working Remotely

  * Sascha: connection and/or response slow from time to time.

    Alarms

  * Tim: alarm from CDC gas at midnight a few nights ago.
o CO_2 bottle switched over. Will need attention in a few weeks.
  * Beni: according to walk-through report from last Friday, Paul Letta
changed out the defective drive in Raid 3 and the alarms have stopped.
o Sergey Raid 5 is partially degraded.

    PrimEx Data Processing

  * Sascha: second monitoring launch is up next.
  * Igal: π^0 mass resolution from the FCAL using new skims is much
improved, expect to finish the calibration this week
  * Beni: sees difference in accidental scaling factor when using
microscope vs. hodoscope, 1.05 vs. 1.1. Difference not seen in other
run periods. Tried reducing number of bunches used from 12 to 2, but
    no change in results.
  * Requirement for having both ADC and TDC values for
luminosity-related hits in microscope being studied
  * Drew Smith working on additional position correction for FCAL

    PAC Preparation

      SRC

  * Sascha: meeting held with Matt, Justin, and Liping on strategy for
    jeopardy
  * physics is still interesting
  * preparing a 4-5 page report
  * planning stand-alone beam request for the PAC after this one

      CPP/NPP

  * Elton: Rory preparing a report and slides for CPP jeopardy
  * Review committee for NPP: Barry Ritchie and Joerg Reinhold
      o received feedback
o Joerg: focus on compatibility with CPP
+ target in CPP proposal mentions tin, in NPP proposal lead,
but since CPP proposal, CPP has decided on lead, no conflict
+ trigger for CPP is TOF, not a good one for NPP, but NPP
wants to add calorimeter energy trigger in parallel, rates
            need to be studied
      o Barry: focus on backgrounds
+ draft weak on backgrounds, nuclear coherent only background
            treated quantitatively
+ work on going to understand other backgrounds, expect report
            by Collab. meeting

      GDH

  * Alexandre: met with review committee, Garth Huber and Frank Nerling
  * Mark presented his APS talk
  * from Q&A with Garth and Frank:
o some areas need more explanation for non-experts in this physics
      o generally supportive
o should get report this week
  * Changes needed for proposal:
      o clarity mainly
o committee suggests asking for more beam time at half linac
energy; do not pre-judge scheduling considerations in proposal

    Engineering

  * Tim: CPP design meeting with principals this week
  * Bobby Bunton: doing 3D-printing of DIRC box airflow improvers
  * Keith Blackburn: updating procedures
  * Scot Spiegel: working on summer SAD schedule
  * Mark Stevens: planning for possible 6-week run

    Electronics

  * Fernando: looking at FCAL2 procurements and installation
  * Need more read-out electronics and HV
  * Cables may have to be removed completely
o cabling scheme had goal of equalizing rates in FADCs
      o added geometrical complication

    Procurements

  * Eugene: it's that time of year
      o pass requests to Eugene
      o projects, replacements, spares
o electronics for FCAL2, including HV supplies, possible items
+ Fernando: starting to get quotes, pass any other electronics
            requests? let him know
o Sascha: will need refurbished CCAL bases with gain 3X or 6X
+ summer: produce more active bases, 150 new dividers
