Dear all,
I used a mailing llst of last year for this: we will have the next
software and computing review on November 10 + 11 this year.
This is a good time, as Halls A and D will be able to show how well they
do with analysis, Hall A should have made good progress
in high-rate tracking for SBS, and Halls B and C should be essentially
ready for their early data. It is also a good time to revisit
our overall computing requirements.
This mail is only about the dates, next we will start looking at the
charge and thinking about preparations,
best regards, Rolf

*Subject: *Software Review - informal dry runs Wednesday Feb. 4, 3:30 pm
L102
Dear all,
See attached the charge and an agenda where I folded in the input
received from the
halls on presenters in the "deep-dive" parts. I would like to have final
talk titles
by tomorrow's meeting such that we can link to them on the indico pages.
We will meet tomorrow (Wednesday) in L102 with remote connection, from
3:30 pm to
5:30 pm. Please submit your talk to Dave Lawrence who has nicely
(thanks!) kept all
info on these software and computing reviews together, or put the draft
on indico.
Remember that in these dry runs we will just go over each others slides,
check for
proper length, make sure relevant information is there, and get
inspiration for
last-minute fixes from your colleagues. No formal dry run.
1) remember you need to load your presentation on to the indico site for the
review (I think all of the speakers may already have access as they
are "repeats",
if not tell me or directly ask Pat Stroop to fix):
https://www.jlab.org/indico and go to 12 GeV Software Review
2) Please submit your FINAL presentation *before* end of this week,
i.e. Friday noon or so at the latest. We will need to create USB
sticks
for the reviewers and upload on the computer we will use for the
review
itself, so we need the talks with some time left on Friday!
3) also remember that if you want any background material on the web (like
responses to previous committee reports, data challenge info, reports of
separate internal software reviews) we should post those too.
I have cc'd Pat Stroop here such that she is aware we may need her help on
Thursday and/or Friday.
Best regards, Rolf

pm L102
Dear all,
Please see attached the charge and agenda for the February 10 and 11
software and computing review
as we will send to the committee. Only one typo fixed in the charge
compared to yesterday (and the
text in italics is not regular). The agenda is all plenary now.
Dry run which will just be a looking at each others slides, no formal
dry run, will be on
Wednesday February 4th from 3:30 to 5:30 pm in L102.
I would only like to request that I get a mail on the exact filling in
of the speakers for
the "deep dive" parts of the agenda somewhere next week, perhaps by late
Wednesday?
Thanks for your input yesterday, we even did not use all the time. We
are getting good in
this.
Best regards, Rolf

Subject: Software Review - planning meeting Wednesday Jan. 21, 3:30 pm L102
Dear all,
O.k., the dates for the software and computing review
are confirmed for February 10 and 11 now.
We will meet on Wednesday, January 21 from 3:30 to 5:00 pm
in L102. There will be remote connection. Please come in with thoughts
about talk topics (look at the previous report too for scope), we
will discuss the likely agenda, we will discuss the charge, the
dates for our informal show and tell of what we plan to present,
and we want to discuss some items we will ask to explicitly make
slides for, tentatively as follows:
1. overview of software to be used and status
e.g. GEANT-4 for simulation, ...
2. overview of databases used and how
e.g. geometry, calibration, ...
3. overview of computing requirements +
spreadsheets showing all bottoms-up calculations
and assumed running days for next 2-3 years
level of detail: core-seconds per event for
a specific (named) core, e.g. Haswell 2.7 GHz
4. overview of computing model showing
flow of data from detector to Phys Rev Letter
(simulation, calibration, reconstruction, ...)
including how physicists will work, what software
tools / applications you plan to use
See you coming Wednesday, Rolf
