[Halld-online] Problems with use of the "halld" account

Hi,

Some problems have occurred with use of the halld account.

This account is a local Linux account created on many of our Linux DAQ
nodes. It has UID=500. The problem is that this UID is not assigned to
the halld account in the CUE system, since the halld account does not
exist in the CUE system. Note that the default GID for the halld
account is "halld", which is defined globally.

Unfortunately this UID shows up as the owner of files in
/group/halld-online and other places, and Kelvin is not happy about
files being owned by an undefined user.

There are a few ways to solve this problem. One is to create a real CUE
user "halld" and change the owner of all the files with UID=500 to the
new UID. Kelvin can do this globally.

Another is to change the owner of the files to another account, e.g. the
halldusers account.

Do you have other ideas?

Whatever is done we have to rethink the use of the halld account.

Thanks,

					Elliott
